99% of the time its the head gasket if your boiling your over flow tank.. every say's replace the thermostat and yet it cure's nothing.. a quick way to check is to diconnect your fuel pump, and spark plugs pull your rad cap and turn the engine over.. if you see bubble's or movement in the coolant level chance's are its your HG...

if you want to replace your thermostat feel free but dont waste money on new coolant because chance's are you will be draining it soon..

Before I replaced the radiator cap, I turned on the car with the radiator cap off. The coolant was not shooting out. Nothing was coming up. Only when it revved to about 5k did it start slowly pouring out Slowly out of the radiator cap hole. When the radiator cap is on, it generally flows into the overslow after a very long drive on the highway or when boosting hard then letting it idle for quite some time.

I would have to vote on the thermostat going out. It wouldn't be that expensive to replace, to see it that is the problem. Also you could change your oil to see if any antifreeze comes out or when i blew my headgasket there was a yogurty cream colored substance under my radiator cap. I would definitely check the thermostat, it sounds like the same issues i had when mine went out.

I replaced my thermostat today but I do not believe that is the problem. I believe many of you are correct and it is a head gasket leak. I do not have the positive symptoms of a headgasket leak (water/oil mixture, smoking exhaust etc...) but I do have vapors coming from the radiator fill. When I put in coolant today, I let the car idle and I could see pockets of air bubbles/foamy coolant come through. It lessened as I filled the coolant to the top since the coolant took place of the air. But very small pockets of foamy coolant kept coming through while the coolant was at max level which suggests there is a small leak in the head gasket where compression from the cylinders is entering the cooling system. At one point since i had the car, I had the car running while overheating constantly (fan belt snapped). I ran for roughly ten miles on the highway. Smoke starting pouring out since my coolant was boiling over. :nono: It was the dumbest move I have ever made while driving this car and I'm sure all of you agree. I was wondering if it was possible to have a warped head. When I rev the motor and hold it steady at about 4k...the coolant pours out of the fill area very slowly but it does which suggests a small leak. Is it significant enough to cause the head to warp? As of now, I may just put in some bar leak fluid to help stop the HG leak. I will do a compression test tomorrow to see how well my cylinders are. Need some opinions of how bad the damage could be.

Been here, had This.

head gasket seeping.

sniff your coolant.... whats it smell like?

honestly you can do a head gasket in a matter of hours.. its not bad at all.. just order a mitsu MLS throw it on w/ some studs and call it good..

your head may be warped the only way to tell is with a strait edge.. or honesly if you dont quite feel up to the task you can have a machinest check it out.. it shouldnt take long..

also if you havent done the timing belt since you have owned the car you should replace that and the tensioner while you have it all off. If your not sure if you head is warped or not i say take it to a machine shop that works on engines and cylinder heads they will check it out for you most likely for free.

Thats odd, my coolant will pour out as soon as I turn on the motor. Before it did the same thing, right before my water pump went out. Maybe its your waterpump.

have you smelled your coolant? ive seen this problem on 3 cars, 1 of which was mine, and they all had nasty smelling coolant, where the compression mixture was seeping into it, pressurizing the coolant. leaving a gas smell in it.

Crap car just starting kicking out some coolant last couple days or so. My temp gauge does not read hot at all around middle of the scale. Car seems to run fine also. I don't see any white smoke or anything .I was also playing with the timing and it was pretty far retarded or advanced. I am setting it to 5 bdtc and see if that has any effect on the coolant out the overflow thing.
I hope mine is not a headgasket, they don't sound that hard to change but have lots of other cars to work on and don't really want to work on my 91 turbo right now.

Its my old 91 that is doing this .not my 97 ..My 97 is undergoing major surgery putting in the mods in my sig.

Eh, when my head warped it'd shoot coolant out of the thermo housing if I tried to start it with the cap off. If I were in your shoes, I'd just replace the thermostat and see if that fixes the problem.

definately have the machine shop check out your head...maybe they can clean it upor even port it a little..eh, eh:sneaky:

check the block too for straigtness

when your at the dealer, pick up a mls headgasket and your timing parts. add some arp headstuds and your car should be better than ever.

think of this a an opportunity.

I recently noticed that after driving for a while there's water comming out of the overflow. The stock temperature gauge doesn't move up at all, just gets to the normal position of warmed up engine. It's not much water that spills out, I checked the level and it was about 1-1.5" below full and refilled. Is there anything that should be routinely replaced about the cooling system ? Like coolant itself or sensors ? I'm sure it hasn't been done to the car yet, hasn't seen many miles at all before I bought it.

How do I check if I'm overheating ? I was thinking about getting a water temperature gauge anyway, where do I best tap the sensor in ?

try replacing your thermostat. My old 84 Cavalier (god i was a poor kid) used to do the same thing

No, I'm trying to keep the overflow tank completely full...but it shouldn't be too far below the mark at the bottom or should it ?

...now you got me wondering, gotta check the manual again

/edit : So I looked it up and next time I drive around I'll have to check if it stays above the LOW mark...I'm not used to this method of checking coolant, with most european cars you can do that with a cold engine...

Alrighty guys, I got a 1998 Eclipse DOHC 2.0 without the turbo and every once in a while it leaks anti-freeze out of the overflow container, i just replaced the Thermostat thinking that would fix it but it didnt?? Any ideas? Would it be the Cap not holding tight enough or what?

Thanks

It could be the cap. Just replace it and see what happens. Might aswell do the small stuff first.

Yes replace the radiator cap would be the first thing to change. I had the same problem, earlier this year. But when replacing the radiator cap make sure you release all the air that is your system.

1. Start the car
2. Refill antifreeze
3. Allow air puffs to escape.
4. Recap with new radiator cap and tighten.

Hopes this helps
