Quieter Exhaust

So I have a nice downpipe at home waiting to be installed after my 'BIG' engine build. It's designed to delete the cat. As the car sits now with the Thermal exhaust, it sounds GREAT, very nice throaty sound and I know with the downpipe it'll sound even better. BUT I know it'll be louder.

I dont want to give up performance but Im going to have to. I want a more silent almost stockish exhaust. I was told that if I put the downpipe on there is NOTHING I can do to even quiet it down a bit. I was thinking of using a couple of resonators to do the job but the guy at the shop told me that wouldnt do anything without the cat. I want to keep my Thermal exhaust but maybe hack it and use resonators.

Do you guys think this will considerably lower the noise? If so, how many should I use? How long should the resonators be and where on the piping should they be welded on? Or if you guys have any options other than putting the stock exhaust back on, while leaving the Thermal and the new downpipe, throw them out there.

That definitely looks like it would hurt performance. And for $72??? , look at the welds on it.

Well the good thing about these is that they're quick to remove so if your going to the track/streets you can take them off with ease

Plus i was just using that one as an example, there are cheaper ones available from ebay for DSMers

Very good point, and it'd be so much easier than installing resonators.

OR....

If you want a quiet exhaust but at the same time want to be able to punch it without the hassle of pulling over to remove a silencer...

You can always put a stock exhaust tip or something, and get an electric cut out ...

Very sleeper and with a push of a button "Go Baby Go!"

Have you tried the Dynatech Splitflow mufflers. I put an oval one on my 3" system and it sounds like a stock 1.5 liter.

Well I WAS considering buying a silencer since it worked for my last car but I cant find one for this Thermal tip, which ~5 inches(which brings me up to my next question)... Does anybody know if Thermals come with a 5 inch tip. I did some research a while ago and somebody said they had a 5 in tip in their old school Thermal so Im almost positive I DO have a Thermal. Also, I havent gottem down to measuring but Im also not sure if I have 3 in piping. The thing certainly sounds like a Thermal. Oh and pboglio I noticed a while ago you also ran a T28 so I think I may try your idea.

Ok now that I actually READ Pboglio's writeup I noticed he said his had a 5 inch tip so scratch my 5 inch question. BUT my piping is not polished like his, which still keeps me wondering if it is or not a Thermal...

I run a Dynomax Turbo muffler on my 2-1/2" system with no cat and it sounds and looks, just like stock. The Honda-punk-ricer-boys don't even notice it!

HMMM well I want to keep the Thermal can so Ill leave that as a last resort. Im aiming towards the Pboglio idea. I just have to figure out how much its going to cost me.

its a silence....it doesn't need to look nice.

If you want the BEST performance w/ no sound.....its time to invest in a electric cut out. Gets loud only when you want to!

I believe the guys that run that 6 bolt AWD hyundia run cut outs. Its such an evil car and runs 10.3s last time i saw it.

The Borla muffler I used was a "divided" core muffler, basically a perforated "V" sheetmetal material tacked into position down the middle of the straight thru muffler.

Resonators are a cinch to install, a good hack saw, couple of heavy duty t-bolt clamps, and a tape measure and it can be done fairly painlessly. That is how I test fit the muffler before bringing it to my welder.

The catalytic converter could be considered a muffling device. I run a 2.5" High flow cat on occasion and it makes a noticeable difference in sound levels, almost too quiet for my tastes but would be perfect for taming the car for people who don't like performance sounding exhausts.

I would stick with 1 main resonator aft of the 2nd 02 sensor with enough straight section to slip on a resonator or better a muffler. I suggest fitting the largest muffler you can squeeze in there.

The main problem is the extra muffler adds more backpressure, and it also adds a good amount of extra weight. I think for a daily driver its worth it.

An added resonator or bullet style muffler will quiet it down some and not give up much/any performance.
My apexi n1 has two resonators and muffler and is pretty quiet actually
My last one i had a bullet muffler and nice Magnaflow at the end and it was pretty quiet as well.

What helps to start with is having a massive main muffler with good sound insulating materials. Greddy is good at this. Thermal exhausts also comes with large canisters and it helps to mellow them out. It's been mentioned by others that it's optimal to place resonators at unequal lengths within the exhaust system to break up any harmonics. Here I'm making a distinction between a resonator which is nothing more than a glorified expansion chamber and a muffler which has much more volume and includes packing material and some level of sound tuning.

Those dynomax bullet mufflers make for a nice compromise between muffler and resonator because they are straight through and do have some sound deadening material as well. I would only use it as a secondary muffler though if your looking to quiet things down. And they are cheap. I definitely agree you need large main muffler as mentioned as well for ultimate sound absorbtion.
