Basic Question:
Is it possible to have lifter tick so loud that the knock sensor detects it as knock and pulls timing ?

If you want more info on the problem read below:

I had a problem with my car about 4 months ago where my car would stutter and make no power under WOT, it ended up being the wire was ripped out of the knock sensor and I was basically running with no knock sensor (was replaced and instantly fixed the problem). Now I have a different problem at highway speeds when I keep it in a certain rpm range. It usually occurs in 4th or 5th gear, mostly when I stick at about the 20-45% throttle range for periods of time the car will do almost the same thing as it used to, sputter, fall on it's face and make no power. The only temp fix it to put it in neutral for about 5 seconds and go back into gear and it goes away. Now I have lifter tick EXTREMELY bad I sound like a woodpecker coming up the block and I just feel the exact same symptoms as before when the car was pulling timing due to no knock sensor so I've been looking for reason it could be doing pulling timing, my wideband is not hooked up (F'N midas put the uego sensor under the frame and it bent it in half n broke the sensor) so I can't be for sure it it puts me in rich mode.

Yes... It's possible... Most people refer to this as Phantom Knock. Phantom meaning "not real" knock. The knock displayed on a logger will go up really high really quickly and as soon as you let off the throttle will fall back to 0. This type of knock since it's not real will not hurt the motor but will KILL performance very badly.

Thanks man. How hard would you rate a 3g lifter job ? Never disassembled a head before (if it's need maybe only the VC ?)

Read through the tech article on a timing belt job. If you are able to complete this then you'll be able to complete a valve lash adjuster job. Once you remove the timing belt, you have to remove the cams in order to get down to the rockers and lash adjusters.

There are also ways to do this without removing the cams but it requires a special tool that's around $100. I find it easier to remove the timing belt.

Thanks a lot guys I'm confident this is my problem now, to even reassure me more it happens very often when I'm next to cars and the lifter tick echoes EXTREMELY loud off other cars. Gotta learn t-belt job now.
