Hey guys, I'm in the process of doing some upgrades on my 1G. I've got some 660 injectors on the way and I am trying to decide between a GM mas/translator or a 2g mas setup. Are there any drawbacks to going with the GM setup? Does the transaltor eliminate the need for an afc? Is it a good idea to have both the translator AND an afc or is it unnecessary?
thanks for the help,
Andy

I've decided on the maft--how effective is it by itself (without the safc)? with a keydiver chip?
thanks

I would definately buy the MAFT if you don't mind spending the money. :thumb: I am in the process of tuning my 90 GSX with the translator, so if you'd like, I can let you know how close it will get to running perfect. Check my profile for my mods, so you can see what setup I am running. I did not want to buy an SAFC because I do not like how they look. The MAFT has many gains over the 2G mas, you can do a search to find out more details. I will be tuning with a Wideband 02, so if the translator is good, I will be able to have good gas mileage as well as good power when I need it. I will be running 22 psi on pump gas.

Most ppl on here will tell you that the AFC is needed for "fine-tuning". My setup isn't really that crazy so the MAFT works out fine. The MAFT allows you to tune in 2% steps at WOT.

My friend and I switched my car from 450-550 earlier last week, and compensating for the injectors took all of 2 secs, and the car ran just as good as it had been. When I installed the MAFT setup I could definately feel a nice sotp gain. The MAFT setup is good as you eliminate the 1G MAS + you can tune.

If you buy a 2G mas, you will still need an AFC to tune the car.

Thanks for the help. The Maft sounds like the way to go. Anybody know the correct technique when using a maft and safc together? Do you "zero" out the maft and tune with the afc or is there a better method?
thanks, Andy

I believe that's correct. If you were going to get a MAFT then I'd hold off on the SAFC until your setup needed such fine-tuning.

Make sure you have a datalogging setup too :)

yeah, I got a datalogger a while ago and just havent been able to afford the other upgrades. Why would I not need to do "fine tuning" at one point and then, later on, have a need for an safc? Also, Do I need to do anything different with the maf or translator if I'm going to place it between the bov and throttle body rather than before the turbo (same place as the old mas)?
Thanks guys
(I've been doing a lot of searching and reading and these are questions I still have)

I wouldn't bother with a SAFC.

If you're a good enough tuner and your car is consistient enough that you notice the difference between 1% and 2% changes (both of which may be unlikely) then you shouldn't be tuning with airflow adjustment.

I run a MAF-T and love it. I am going to get a S-AFC to fine tune the RPM band. I use a wideband also, the A/F ratio is really close, but could be slightly better. I get about 29 mpg on the freeway and roughly 18mpg in the city, not driving for economy.

"Why the hell do you need two threads on the same topic?"

sorry to upset you with my dual threads. A new question came up and I thought I may get more input if I started a new thread with an appropriate title. I apologize.

You don't need to apologise, everybody makes mistakes. Just keep that in mind next time.

Some of the questions in that thread were similar to ones being asked here. In addition, this is titled "quick MAFT questions," which certainly keeps it open for more than one issue.
