since i am new to this i have a few queations. i just bought my eclipse about a year and a half ago . i own a 95 gst. i am in the military and have been deployed twice so i have not had time to fix up my car. since i have been back i have noticed some signifcant problems in my car.

1. crank walk, all the symptoms suggested in the tech guide points me right to it. is it hard to change out a crank shaft and crank shaft sensor.

2. i have noticed where the piping goes into the turbo their is oil all around it does this mean my turbo is bad and by the way it is a t-25 which i replaced with one out of a 99 gsx.

3. this is kind of tricky for me under my car i am leaking oil not by my turbo or by my oil pan. their are two oil lines directly under my car slowly dripping oil. what is this and how can i fix it

looks like you forgot #3...

anyways, i wouldn't just change the crank and the crank angle sensor. it is premature thrust bearing wear that causes this, so that will be bad to.

also i have seen 1 and heard of a few crankwalked motors being rebuilt and they also crankwalked within a few weeks.

i would consider a 6-bolt swap if i were you, and if you can't afourd it i would look into used 7 bolt short block

What other oil lines are under your car that aren't connected to the turbo?

The only way to know for sure if you have crank walk is to get a dial caliper and measure it, or take the pan off and check your thrust bearing clearance. If your car drives, the crank sensor is working. A common misdiagnosis is when the crank walks so far, it destrys the sensor...leading the mechanic to believe the car is not running because of a faulty sensor. They give you a new one for a heafty price, and you still have crankwalk. I wouldnt' rebuild a 7-bolt, but if you measure the crank play and its still in spec, I'd drive it till it drops.

Check your turbo for shaft play to tell if its dead, but oil in the pipes is pretty much a sure bet that its dead.

I've heard a lot about crank walk but still don't quite understand it. Does this affect 97-99 GSXs? and then everyone says in order to fix it you need to swap in a 6 bolt.....what does that mean exactly? Is that an entire new engine? How much does it cost to do this swap if crank walk happens? Thanks

In either 97 or 98, Mitsu switched to a 2-piece thrust bearing to help combat the walking crank issue. I'm not sure how well, if at all, it helped. I've heard of cases of crankwalk in all years of 2g turbos.

Swapping to a 6-bolt is basically just swapping in a block/crank from 89-mid 92 with six bolts that hold the flywheel to the crankshaft. Keep in mind, once you get the new block and crank in, you will need to do certain modifications to it to put it in your car. There are many write-ups on this and the cost varies. I could have done mine for about $300 or so if I wanted to keep the stock 1g block, but I decided to do a full rebuild and forged internals.

Here is a website that shows the method I used.

Okay, thanks for the info. How often would you say crank walk happens in 97-99s? Like how many out of 10 would walk?

Its kinda hard to post it down to a specific number like that. There are many people both on this board and a large number that don't tune that don't report anything...good or bad. Here is a poll that was done that shows the breakdown of people that either had or didn't get crankwalk per production year. Keep in mind that this is not a poll of everyone on the site..just those who reported.
