Ok i searched but every search brought up "removing crank PULLEY".

On my 1990 tsi, the rod bearings went out. So i am replacing the main and rod bearings and putting a new crank in (crank was scored). I am dropping it from the bottom (not removing the motor from the car).

I have the crossmembers, oil pan, rods, etc off. Its basically the crank sitting there with the tranny side and timing belt side still in.

I am wondering what the best way is to get the crank out?

Obviously, im leaving the tranny in until i get the timing side of the crank off. How do i do this? When i turn the crank pulley with the 1/2" socket, it just turns the crank obviously?

How do you get the timing side of the crank off? and then after that, its onto the tranny side, which i am sure i can do.

Can anyone offer advice for dropping the crank?

thanks!

By your post it sounds like the only thing still holding it on are the rear oil seal and the front cover/oil pump housing. If you took your main caps off already then you need to put them back on for support until you remove the timing belt compenents and front cover. Then you need to take the tranny out, remove the flywheel an take off the aluminum piece that holds the rear crankshaft seal. Then the caps can come off and the crankshaft can be pulled.
Honestly, it would be easier in the long run to pull the motor from the car.

the main caps are still on. THis is just a DD so i am just throwing in new bearings and crank the easiest way taht i can.

so you are saying that i dont even need to unbolt the timing belt side of the crank? once i remove the tranny and all that side of stuff, i can just pull the crank out of there?

No, I am not saying that. The front case behind the timing belt has to come off as well. The crank goes through it.

gotcha.

so i should get it into 1st gear to remove the big bolt on the timing side of the crank. pull all the timing side off (well all that is needed to pull off), then finish taking my tranny out correct?

You'll probably need something else to hold the crankshaft from spinning. Since you have the oil pan off i would just wedge a rod/screwdriver between the weights on the crank and the block. Or use an impact gun if you can.

my impact gun is electrical so its not great for axle nuts/crank bolts :(

My impact is also electric and it pulled all the crank pulley bolts out with no problem. I suggest you try that first before you under estimate it's might and power. Mine pulled everything out without needing something welded. But yeah like HouseGSX said pull off the front case to free the timing side of the crank and then you seem to know the rest of the way to do it.
