Question on 1996 2.0 non-turbo motor

I'm back with some questions for you guys. OK, no spark on 1&4. I still don't understand exactly why, but the problem is that something blew up inside the timing cover. I have some little ball bearings and a bearing retainer. Haven't got it all apart yet to tell.

So:
Is this an interference motor? That is, if the belt were to break, do the valves go too? The belt is not broken on this one, but I think the cams may have jumped a couple teeth.

There are two bolts that hold the motor mount bracket on. These things feel like they must be 3' long. I can't get them out and thus can't get the bracket off. Any hints on this?

to answer one of your quistions yes if it blows it will bend and how bad ovisley depends on how fast the engine was running

Well, we managed to get the timing cover off. It appears that someone replaced the two bolts that hold the bracket on with some extra long ones. Anyway, the problem is that the idler pulley and the tensioner pulley are both toast. As in just the outer sleeve ridding on the inner sleeve with nothing inbetween. I just hope the valves are OK. I think what I am going to do is put new pulleys in with the old belt (1 year old) and crank it over and check the compression. If it is good, then I'll put a new belt on, which looks to be about $50, and he should be good to go. If the compression is bad (valve boo-boo), then I guess we'll cross that one when we get there. Pulling the head doesn't look to be too bad once the front cover is off anyway. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

your valves should be ok i have had a belt jump a tooth on my friends we put a new belt etc etc and it runs fine other than that it sounds like you have it pretty well laid out as to what you need to do good luck :thumb: edit: as far as the spark check to make sure you have good wires and plugs and that your coil is good 1&4 run off the same coil
 
Well, here's the post script:

What happened: He was driving along and heard a knocking sound. Maybe a mile later, another knocking sound and the car stopped.

SX: No spark on 1&4, spark on 2&3. New ECM had the same thing (quick $90). Coil was good. Switching the driver circuits for 2&3 to 1&4 gave good spark on that coil.

DX: Totally blown tensioner and idler pulleys. As in multiple parts with little ball bearings in the bottom of the cover. Belt (1 year old) had some cuts in it. Jumped 1 or 2 teeth.

TX: We put a $125 O'Reilly Gates kit in with 2 new pulleys/bearings and a new belt, which was the only way to get the pulleys as they don't sell them separately. Cranked the motor and it had good compression by finger method (my compression tester wouldn't reach down the hole). Put it all back together and he is good to go.

dude u blew ur head, ur going to have bent valves, my car was idleing when the the tbelt failed and i had bent valves....sorry to tell u that

Sorry dude, UB Wrong. It is back together and runs fine. He dodged the bullet. Note: Good compression by finger method.
