I just bought an Evo 3 16g turbo brand new. I got home and found that it has a signifigant amount of shaft play from side to side (not front to back). The turbine does not touch the compressor side inlet, but the exhaust side is fine with no play at all, but I just want to check before I install it. Please help and respond.

Well, the shafts are connected, so if one moves the other should too. Are you sure its brand new? Good source? There is supposed to be a little bit of shaft play up and down when they are brand new. It will go away as soon as oil pressure is applied.

How much are we talking about here?

I bought it from a performance shop in my town , the play is not enough to even touch the sides of the compressor inlet (very little) , i guess i'm just paranoid.

Yea, after seeing the major shaft play in my old t-25, I was paranoid when I got my new e16g and it did that. I immediately searched the forums for anything that would have to do with it. As soon as I hooked it up and got oil pressure, shaft play was totally eliminated. No worries! :thumb:

Turbo's will have side to side shaft play. Theyres no oil in the housing so it has room to move a little. little side to side is no big deal at all as long as it doesnt touch housing, in and out is bad.

Yep, I remember my old evo3 16g had some play brand new, so I called a diesel shop in town and tal;ked to them. They said that mitsubishi turbo's use 2 bearings (one inside of another) to keep the friction minimal and allow high rpm's without any damage. So until there is any oil in there, it will move a lil becaus of the space to fill. Just pour oil into the feed port and then check it, I bet it will be much better.

When I got my evo 16g I was worried about the play too. It almost seemed like it was more then my 14b. Sent the turbo back to get it checked out, I was told it was normal. I dont worry about it anymore.

I went back to guys i brought the 16g from amd even they said the same thing , thanks :talon:.

I`ve had my evo3 big16g on for a year now. I just cheaked it for play and its pretty soild,Very unlikely too have shaft play on a evobig16g. It could also be cause by an improper water/oil supply causeing premature bearing weardown or heat spots on the shaft.

the turbo hadnt been run, how would that of happened? Its normal for a turbo to have a slight side to side movement. No oil running through it.

My brand new e16g has shaft play also. When I checked my 14b on the car it's shaft play felt similar OMG

Then I thought about the fact that the new turbo is completely dry. Anyway I have a 1 year warranty on it :D
