Question about my car.

Hey all.. I hear everyone always talking about 4 bolt /6 bolt, so does my car have a 4 bolt 6 bolt? eveything on the car is original, it doesnt have a new motor or rear or anything so would my car have the 6 bolt motor and 4 bolt rear?

I'm not into the 1g's but I'm pretty sure it should because it's an early model 1g... 6 bolt motor and 4 bolt rear

Yeah, I was reading that the 89-mid 92's were all 6 bolt motors and then after they became 7? I was just curious about the rear end.. It should be a 4 bolt, shouldnt it?

You should have the 6 bolt motor and the 3 bolt rear end, the 4 bolt started in 92 I think.

6-bolt motor, big rods: 90 - early 92
7-bolt motor, small rods: late 92 - 94

7-bolt motor (B) (the more common crankwalk motor): 95 - 99

The engineers that decided that they should change this stuff in the middle of a production model year should be lined up and shot.

Makes it so much more difficult to find what you need.....

From the VFAQ:
According to the staff of Conicelli Mitsubishi, all 1G cars produced before the second week of June, 1991, have 3-bolt rears. This essentially covers all 1990 and 1991 DSMs. All 1992-1994 cars have 4-bolt rears.

Many DSM owners are under the mistaken impression that the changeover between the original 3-bolt rear end and the stronger 4-bolt version occurred halfway through the 1992 model year. This is not so.

From what I have heard any 92 made before May of 92 has the 6/4 combo. After May it is a 7/4 combo. I got lucky and my Talon is a late 91 build date so I have the 6/4 combo. My buddy (MoBoost) has a build date after May and his is also a 6/4. We didnt expect it to be but when we pulled the motor is was a 6 bolt so the may date could be wrong. Anyone know 100% what the cut off is.

I knew about that, and I knew how to tell the difference between the oil pans, but I just haven't had time to.

I'd really like to know if ANYONE has IN PERSON seen a 1992 model year 7-bolt 4663 engine.

If we knew all 1992's are 6/4, that'd make it much easier.

Dude, it's a known fact that they changed from 6-bolts to 7-bolts about halfway through 92. The only way your going to know is to look at the oil pan or drop the transmission and count the flywheel bolts.

Have you EVER heard of a 7-bolt that came originally in a '92?

And you say 'halfway', VFAQ says 'May '92', (which is RIGHT before the '93 switch) yet Mo-Boost got one AFTER May '92 with a 6/4!

I don't think we know as much as we think we do. I think we put too much stock in heresay. The VFAQ wasn't created by DSM engineers or mystical mechanic gods. It was created by enthusiasts like you and me. It is usually accurate, but it never hurts to check.

Again, I say, if anyone has seen a '92 7-bolt, post here and say so.

I crawled under my car this afternoon and it is a 3 bolt rear.. It was made in apr of 91.. oh well...:thumbdown

Here is my understanding of it all.

90-91 cars are 6/3 cars

Early 92's are 6/4 cars

and because there were random parts laying around from the crossover they were doing, the late 92 cars are mostly 7/4's but there are some 6/4's rolling around out there.

So the definate way to find out what you have, is to get up and go look. Good luck.

That sounds pretty probable.

If someone could verify it with a 7-bolt '92, that'd be great. Maybe I'll start a new post about it.......
