I did some research on here and I'm a bit confused on the boost controller. I know it's been beaten to death, but I read probably 25-30 threads on it and I'm not clear on it still.

I'm coming from the diesel world, so I'm not sure it works exactly the same.

On my diesel, I have an adjustable boost elbow. What the elbow does is vent off some of the pressure going to the wastegate. So if the turbo is making 50psi boost, the waste gate might only see 35psi so it's not open just yet.

I'm guessing that the gasser setup is kind of the same, but I don't understand the need for a $50plus "controller".

If didn't do anything to the timing or fuel system, can I safetly increase the boost on my car, or should I leave it stock?

Stock. Gas and diesel engine's are worlds apart when it comes to tuning. You will want to keep your boost level stock until you can upgrade your fuel system to support the extra airflow. Read through these sections and it should explain a lot. There is an infinite amount of information on here at your disposal. Just may take some time to go through.

It sounds like you have the right idea. The boost controller bleeds off some of the pressure going to the wastegate so the engine makes more pressure. The wastegate still thinks it is the same pressure because some is bled off. You should be able to go to 13-14psi without any problems, but anything above that may result in a lean condition with the stock fuel system. Good luck:thumb:

I read a few of the writeups, but none of the pics load since photobucket and those kind of sites are blocked.

I was talking to a guy I bought some parts off last night and he talked about pulling out a restrictor to increase the boost. After some searching on here, I guess it's called a BCS.

Yes, the BCS is the stock boost controller. $50 for a good MBC is not much. You can go cheaper, but you might get what you pay for. The stock MBC is a bleeder-style; it leaks air back into the intake pipe in order to hide boost pressure from the WGA. A ball/spring MBC hides boost by blocking the signal until it is high enough to move the ball out of the way. When the ball's out of the way, they act a bit like a bleeder. Bleeder MBCs tend to limit boost more gradually; your boost will get to the desired level, but it takes a bit longer. Ball/Spring MBCs are faster to limit boost, but they sometimes react a bit too late resulting in a boost overshoot or "spike" that settles back to the desired boost level.

Most folks like ball/spring MBCs. I'm one of them. If you get a bad one, you'll find that $50 wasn't really much money.

I did the BCS restricter mod and didn't see any real change. Others claim to get a couple psi more boost. Stock is ~11psi. I wouldn't increase boost at all until I had a logger to monitor the engine function, but I'm the careful type.
