question about air intake hose

ok guys,today i open my hood and some rubber hose was broken i mean the hose which comes from air intake pipe to somevere under the battery,so my question is what does that hose which goes from air intake pipe to somewere under the battery do??? Thanks

be more specific i know your car is turbo if its a GST but does the pipe come out of a little box behind the passenger headlight or does it come out of the intake manifold which is all the way on the back of the egnine in the middle if it connects to the intake manifold its your upper intercooler piping get it replaced immediatly, otherwise if it comes out of the box its your intake line also it needs to be replaced as soon as possible neither should cost too much

cap the nipple on the intake pipe, not the charcole canister... just make sure that hose going under the batter is pointed downwards, as close to the ground as you can,...its not that important as long as you close of the intake pipe where that hose was...

That is H O R R I B L E advice. You're not explaining what the canister is for, what it does when in use and things associated with it.

The system needs to explained to the guy, or he needs to get a Haynes Repair Manual and read up on his own. The information that the Haynes Repair Manual contains is priceless. A little common sense and reading skill is all that it takes. He needs to find out how the system works so he can decide for himself what to do next.

This is an excerpt from the repair manual on the Charcoal canister, the hose you're referring to and related components:

Evaporative Emissions Control (EVAP) system:

General Description:

1. This system is designed to trap and store fuel that evaporates from the fuel tank, throttle body and intake manifold that would normally enter the atmosphere in the form of hydrocarbon (HC) emissions.

Emissions control, to prevent gasoline fumes out of your gas tank from escaping to atmosphere and eat up our planet's ozone layer. It's a good thing, government requires it.

2. The Evaporative Emission Control (EVAP) system consists of a charcoal-filled canister, the lines connecting the canister to the fuel tank and purege control solenoid valve.

After reading #2, pay close attention to #3 point.

3. Fuel vapors are transferred from the fuel tank and throttle body to a canister where they're stored whyen the engine isn't runing. (Ever open your tank's gas cap on this or any other car and it seems like everything's pressurized inside? That's fuel vapor. They test the fuel cap at emissions testing stations in some states/counties, to make sure it doesn't leak). When the engine is runing, the fuel vapors are purged from the canister by intake airflow and consumed in the normal combustion process.

That's your broken line. When pressure from fuel tank fumes builds up, the fumes are consumed by the motor via your air intake pipe. If it's broken, fuel vapor is just escaping into air under the hood, possibly giving a gasoline smell now and then, polluting earth, possibly catching on fire (think explosion, although I've never heard of it happening--or maybe it does happen, but people chalk it up to something else).

Last part:

4. The charcoal canister is equipped with a purge control valve on turbo models. Depending upon the runing conditions (coolant temp, volume of airflow, intake air temperature and barometric pressure) AND THE PRESSURE IN THE FUEL TANK, the ECU opens or closes teh passageways to the throttle body.

haynes are good but i would recomend the factory service manuals you should be able to pick them up on ebay for 50 bucks or so...

why not just get the manual on cd or whatever for 12 buck i think,.. 50 bucks seems kinda steep,... also i bought my hanes from amazon for 20, brand new, whatever price you can get it from ebay for, im sure its not much less than 20, and i know you have no way of knowing the condition of the book,.... 20 bucks for a new one sounds great to me, thats why i bought it...

We can't really take our desktop computers to the backyard or garage, unless you have a laptop, but it's a bad idea with dirt all over your hands. Don't need to fire up the computer with the Haynes manual. It's just a really good thing to have around. I have the CD and the book. I use the book more than the CD.

First mention I've heard of gasoline vapors getting to or affecting the ozone. That lie was about Freon. Oddly, just when DuPont's patent was running out, and George I was a lame duck.
