I was just curious, I've had knock issues ever since I installed my cams & I did swap to ARP headstuds at the same time without removing the head. The other day a buddy was behind me & said when I went WOT he saw white smoke. So I started to wonder if my head gasket isn't sealed properly & is pushing some coolent under a certain amount of boost. I was just wondering if this is what is actually happening could that be a source of knock?

I haven't done a compression test but will in the near future but I haven't noticed any other clues such as oil in the antifreeze. Also wanted to verify the head gasket would be the only source if I am burning some antifreeze?
 
It doesn't over heat but its ran hotter ever since I installed the fmic a few years ago. During the summer I previously saw temps in the 200-206 range most of the time, with 203-206 being what I saw most. The strange thing I have noticed this year is once the car is fully warmed I've seen cruising temps as low as 193 & as high as 213. Previous to this year it was pretty rare to see it hit 213 & would only do so on the hot, hot summer days.
 
I'm not the 4g63 guy, but I offer my thought anyways.

On many vehicles, when aggressive cams and springs are installed, the ECU pulls time as it interprets noise from the valve-train as knock. I don't know how aggressive FP1's are. Can you desensitize knock input with dsmlink?

Yes I can desensitize knock, but no need to as it doesn't seem to be mechanical knock & it only happens under heavy boost.

Kevin- Oh c'mon we don't all live in igloos up here ROFL But yeah were currently only about 70 deg. Before the fmic I use to run 196 all the time on cruise in the hot summer. Coolent is a 50/50 mix of water & anitfreeze with the royal purple water wetter. I thought maybe the stock thermostate may be giving me an issue so I picked up another Mitsu one & still saw the exact same temps. My core is fairly large & I kept as much of the factory ducting as possible when I did the install but I haven't added additional ducting as of yet.

Well I'm sure you've seen my several threads on cooling by now if you want to run in the 160s! :thumb:

Ya have seen the threads :thumb: but defently don't want to run in the 160's. I believe you won't see full timing advance at that temp & the ecu doesn't go into "learn" mode for your fuel trims (not high enough operating temps) But I do wish I could keep it under 200F so I'm not seeing the 1 deg timing being pulled for over 206 F. That will be the next project.

Back to my origional question, if I was infact pushing some coolent under boost could this be a source of knock? Don't tell me I stumped all you wisemen OMG
 
My trims are already tuned within 3%. As for timing, I'm going to ask that question on dsmlink forums. Maybe Thomas can confirm if the ecu code restricts timing advance based on low temps. I never heard of that.

I believe it works the same as when your coolent temps get to hot. If your a certain amount to low you see 1 deg less advance & then if your even lower you see 2 deg, etc. I believe I have a thread from Thomas on this at home but its been awhile since I've read it so I may be off. I'm thinking around 172 it what is classified as proper operating temp for the ecu but this again could be off.
 
I think you may be talking about trims or open loop mode for a 1G. On dsmlink wiki Thomas posted all the coolant temp adjustments in the ecu code and it only showed timing gets pulled for hot temps. But I posted a thread to double check on this to make sure.

You never know, I could just be making things up. I am getting old, I've heard you tend to do that when your old :D
 
You may be right and I appreciate pointing that out because I'm running 160s temps -- blazing new trails for DSMs everywhere!! ROFL So it's good to find out how this affects performance if it does.
