Fergus,
Hi guys.. new to the boards.. I've looked around here... looks like a real cool place! I'm currently driving a 98 contour... fun little family 4 door (im 18). But last night at a party I had one of those encounters that everyon hopes for. No no i didnt hook up with a real cute girl.. BETTER! i found a car covered in useless trash in the kid's garage.. to my surprise a little cleaning up of the place proved the car to be a 1st gen talon tsi ! It has been sitting there for 5 years! Apperantly the only thing wrong with it is the starter! And the rents will sell it for real cheap he said. So Keeping that in mind once i get a chance to take an indepth look at it what things should I look for? I have heard many things about having to replace turbos on older DSM's after so many kms is that true? What kinda milage is acceptable? Purely visual wise what else can I spot that could cause me probs? I'll get the vin and do a carfax on her i think. I've wanted a boosted car for so long! And i think this can really happen. :talon: Thanks dudes!

If the car has been sitting for 5 years, the first thing I would do is check the timing belt. Better yet, just replace it. The reason I say this is more about the balance shaft belt than the timing belt. When you replace the timing belt, you also replace the balance shaft belt. I bought my Talon, which had been sitting for about the same number of years, and the balance shaft belt was dry rotted so bad I could break it with my fingers. You wouldn't want to put a new starter on there, fire it up, and have your timing belt jump (because of balance shaft belt breakage) and trash your engine:)

Yes, I must be pretty close. I live next to John Quaden Dodge along Hwy 16. Thanks about the car, it should be a beast when I get the engine back in it. I am assembling the engine now, and hope to have everything put back together by summer.

I am also in the process of getting a dsm as a second car.

Awhile back I was gonna get a dsm and sell my camaro but I can't do it.

Buddy has a 91 AWD TSI with 130k for sale. Already has aftermarket sway bars, 255 walbro and a 3'' apexi n1 exhaust from the turboback....sweet daily driver/winter ride. I just gotta get 1800$
