winnipeg,
When doing the rewire do you cut the 12 volt key power at the pump or do you leave it intact and just splice into it for the relay. I cut it completley and now it seems that my fuel gauge is not working. It was the white with blue stripe wire.

Well I found that my gauge works, I just didn't have any gas. I went and put some fuel in but the low fuel light will not go out. Did anyone else have this happen on their rewire job?

A relay is an on/off switch, which means it has to go between two wires. In electronics, if a wire is connected it's on (electricity can flow), and if it's disconnected it's off. You can think of a relay like it's one of those big throw switches they always have on the cartoons. If the relay gets the right signal, it connects the two wires and turns it on. If it gets another signal, it disconnects the two wires and turns it off.

If you spliced the relay in, then no matter what the relay did electricity would still be able to flow through the uncut line. You'd never be able to turn anything off via the relay. Gotta cut the line and put the relay in the middle of the two ends, like a gatekeeper.

I understand what the relay does. I am realey impressed with how well the rewire works. My car fires right up eith no hesitation. My concerne is that my low fuel light will not shut off and the only thing I did was cut the 12 volt wire that runs the pump and the 12 volt that turns the pump on. I was wondering if one of these wires works in conjunktion with the fuel gaeuge and activates the low fuel light. I didn't touch the other two wires in the middle of the harness only the two on oppposite ends of the harness. I think I will ty and put everyting back to stock and just splice into the power and key power and see if the light goes out. This way the pump will still get 13.5 volts and if the relay ever fails at least the car won't quit.

I'll be rewiring my pump soon, and I was going to follow this article. Did you use the same article? If not, you might be able to figure something out based on it. I have no idea if the method in that article has any problems, but folks always point people to it for a rewire tech article.

Good luck! Let me know if it works (I wanna get confirmation that it's a good way to rewire).

If it's not too much trouble you could try just shorting the wires across the relay. This would close the circuit and bring it back to "stock" state, electrically. This could rule out the possibility of the fuel gauge circuit depending on the wires you cut.

Also, could it just be a coincidence? Maybe it's not the wires you cut, maybe something was loose or had a bad connection. I just pulled a plug (on the fuel pressure solenoid) and the contacts had lots of corrosion, maybe it's a bad connection that got jigggled. Just an idea.

And I hope you weren't offended at my explanation, just trying to help where I can. Good luck with figuring this out.

For the rewire, only cut the black wire with the white stripe. You didn't need to cut the wire on the other end of the harness. Cut it between the harness and the fuel pump. Then one side will go to 87 on the relay (pump side) and the other (car side) will go to 86 on the relay.
