I have a 1996 GST with an auto transmission. My question is this and I would prefer replies from people that have experience with upgraded auto transmissions. (What are the smartest mods to do on the tranny to support 500whp?) I do not have much knowledge with these trannys because I choose not to work on them, i prefer everything else. I will be upgrading the tranny cooler of course and relocating it to the other side (passenger). I also plan to have a complete rebuild done but I would like to know what should be thrown in the tranny while it's apart? Also plan on throwing in the LSD and some performance axles. The car is not going to be a daily driver but will be drove on weekends. Only racing will be drag, so I'd like a tranny that can rocket me and still be fairly decent on the weekends. I understand I could ask my mechanic this question but I'd like to hear it from the experience behind the wheel!!! Thanks in advance.

Stock auto trannies have held 400hp, and gone 10's..That's also awd and not fwd like you have..

I think you may have more of a problem with wheel spin then upgrading the hell out of your tranny..

So while your looking into it all, you might want to invest in a set of slicks for the track..That should help minimize wheel spin, and give you the best traction for the launch..
If you get the slicks, then I would worry about upgrading the hell out of your tranny..

If your doing it yourself, a stock rebuild should run you less than a thousand bucks..If you want to restall your converter they can do that too..Although almost any transmission shop can restall your converter..

Thanks again for the replies!!! Im really not looking to go and rip my axles apart with slicks but I still want a decent launch. I pretty much want a tranny that can handle 500whp and actually hold up for quite a while. Im looking to be able to just punch it whenever I feel like and not have to worry about my tranny going out on me. Do you suggest I get the LSD, especially since the tranny will be out? Whats the deal with the "restall"? Is that like a 2500-stall or something, please explain?

A restall on the torque converter means, that they restall the converter..So that instead of putting power to the axles at 1000rpm it stalls up to a cetain point, then it transfers the power..

Which on a fwd if you restall to high, when the converter gets stalled up your going to spin your wheels instead of going forward..

On an auto awd launch we like to stall our torque converter up high enough to have some boost off the line..That's basically what the restall is for..That is also on larger turbo's..

Thanks again. What are you stalling at with awd?

I was on a 16g untill I blew it up..So anything above 3k was good for me..But there are guys running really large turbo's on auto's..Nitrous for the stall is also being used on large turbo's....When antilag on dsmlink is just not enough..
