i have a 93 tsi the harmonic balancer (crank pulley) has broken on me so i thought now would be a good time to buy some light weigh pulleys . my question is do i have to buy "underdrive pulleys". dont these make the waterpump and alt spin slower? i live in the desert so anything not helping cool the car i wont like to do so much. or can i buy light weigh pulleys . if so any suggestions on what to get ?? thanx in advance for any help .

Stay with standard OEM pulleys and an OEM harmonic balancer. The only exception I would make (and I did) was to go with a Fluidampr harmonic balancer on a stroker.

For future reference (in case you haven't heard this elsewhere), new auto parts store HB's and OEM HB's are NOT the same. I bought a brand new harmonic balancer from O'Reilly's, and it came apart in less than 4k miles. Luckily I was pulling into my driveway when it decided to grenade itself. Get a true OEM unit from a dealer, or from an aftermarket shop only if you can verify that it is in fact Mitsu.

+1 for OEM. Like Calan said the only exception would be for a Fluidampr. Keep your budget in mind though. OEM is about $120 and Fluidampr is about $300.

The reason you don't want a cheap aftermarket pulley is because it won't have the damper which reduces vibrations on the actual crankshaft. Getting a cheap solid pulley could cost you big later on. Keep in mind that it is not just a crank pulley, its a harmonic balancer. The OEM pulley has a rubber damper and the Fluidampr has a special fluid damper (as the name implies).

MD376609 - 1992-1994 7 bolt Harmonic Balancer.

Hope this helps!

The underdrive or lightweight pulleys will destroy your crank. If you are just using the car on the track then go with them but for DD OEM pulley or Fluidamper.

That's what I have:ohdamn: Now I have to go back and look for my OEM one to put on. What a hassle:boring:

Good info though.

good thing you know now instead after your crank being in 5 pieces wondering what happened . "I found some posts that said that happened to them from using light weight pulley instead a balanced one. very happy i asked before i did anything."

question?? does anyone know how much a stock o.e.m. harmonic balancer(crank pulley) weights ??
