Depends on what pulleys you're trying to remove. I've used an old alternator belt and a chain wrench before. The crankshaft pulley has a spot for a 1/2" drive extension. What pulleys are you trying to take off exactly ?

The crank pulley will come off by removing the 4-12mm bolts around the center bolt. The center bolt(that you put the 1/2 inch extension) is to remove the crank sprocket.

This is the way it is on my 2g anyway. im assuming its the same on yours

It depends on each pulley, I have special ways of taking each one off.

^helpful

It's pretty cramped in there, that's the worst part about it. Since everything is driven off the crank, you have to keep the motor from turning over while you break the pulleys' bolts. you can either put it in gear with the E-brake on (Put the key under a rock at least 12 feet away from the car!) and break the bolts on all the pulleys you need off. Otherwise, like Maynard said, the 1/2 in. drive fits into the crank bolt. You can put a 1/2 in. drive in the crank bolt and find some place to wedge the handle so it doesn't turn over, and then you can break the pulleys' bolts. Oh, and don't mess with anything that has to do with timing while you're in there. Hope this helps.

ok. ya the reason i am doin it is because i have to get the head off my car and put a new one on. is it necessary to take off ALL of the pulleys or just certain ones?

Loosen the 4 10mm bolts off of the water pump pulley first, they should come off easily enough. After those are off, take tension off of the alternator and power steering and remove the bolts the rest of the way and take off the belts. Then take tension off of the A/C and remove that belt.

After that there should be nothing else left on the crank pulley. Remove the lower driver's side splash guard to make it easier to get to the pulley. There should be 4 12mm bolts in there that will come off best with an impact wrench. If one is not available, put a breaker bar on it and pound it down very quickly. If you do it fast and hard enough, the bolts should break loose without turning the pulley too much. Once the bolts are off, start prying on the pulley to take it off. After that, take the timing belt cover off and releive tension on the timing belt. That should be it for belts.

If you are just doing a head swap, you have no reason to take the crank sprocket off, so leave that big center bolt.

Any other questions feel free to post.

I have another question. How do you time an engine? could you please go step by step thanks.

The link that Steve posted is for mechanical timing. If you are interested in base ignition timing, you need to put a timing light on your crank pulley and make sure you get the dot so its blinking around the 5* mark. You adjust your timing via your cam angle sensor on the passenger side of the motor attached to the intake cam.
