Project Codeine DSM with cold ass AC!

I just want a fun automatic car, with working ac. Is that too much to ask for?

Well after much searching and waiting, I have finally found a good platform for me to start my DSM adventure. This is my first DSM however I am not a stranger to working on cars. I previously had numerous swapped Hondas (H2b eji, turbo DA, type r front end integra) as well as an 03 Evo 8. My 03 Evo is actually the entire reason I fell in love with the 4g63. I ended up selling my Evo but still had the itch to want a 4g63. After searching craiglist almost every day, I ended up finding this car in a very unlikely place, OfferUp. I ignore all of the tinted headlights and 19 inch rims and just wanted to go see the car. The guy claimed the car was bone stock with only a BOV and what truly caught my attention was that the AC was WORKING!!! My initial thought about going to see the car was that it was going to see a clunker. But this car was anything but that. Everything works on the car as it should, I even have 2 oem keys, and working cruise control.

My very first plans before doing anything is doing a timing belt job on the car and doing a major tune up. I have heard enough horror stories of people destroying their DSM due to lack of maintenance. I don't want to be associated with that stigma. I have already ordered a timing belt kit, water pump, spark plugs, and valve cover gasket from Rock Auto as well as a timing belt tool kit from ExtremePsi. I also plan on getting rid of all of this black tint on the headlights and tail lights.

I am mostly doing this build thread for myself, to track my progress and see how the car develops. I hope this provides entertainment to some of you, as there are numerous threads that have done so for me.

$80 later, and a few hours at the junkyard and I found all of these goodies! There were only two eclipses at the junk yard today, 1 2ga and 1 2gb. Thankfully they werent completely torn apart. I went to the junkyard only searching for an OEM Cooling Fan and an OEM AC Fan. I got lucky and found both of them. The car currently has two mishimoto slim fans, but I prefer to run OEM being that the car is stock.

Being that my current tail lights and headlights are severely blacked out, i opted to just replace them. A local enthusiast hooked me up with a set of OEM headlights as well as OEM taillights, unfortunately the rear center garnish was missing. I ended up finding it at the junk yard so I was a happy camper.

I am very picky when it comes to having clean lights so I had to clean the reverse lights. Here is a comparison before and after I sanded and polished one of them.

Next I am going to install the new taillights, after a good polish, and will move on to the front end of the car.

AND THE PARTS ARE HERE!!! After waiting about a week, everything I ordered has arrived. I ordered a Gates timing belt kit, Gates water pump, NGK Plugs, and FelPro Valve cover gasket. I also ordered a timing belt tool kit from ExtremePsi.

After battling with my old ass tint today, I was finally able to remove it all. The goal is to get all other miscellaneous parts (Power Steering Belt, AC belt, etc.) by tomorrow, and install everything on Wednesday. Tomorrow I should be able to clear up my OEM headlights and have them installed. I am debating whether I should switch back to regular bulbs or keep the HID's :hmm:

Looks like it should be quite a project..

Those wheels with that ride height are just rediculous, what was the PO thinking?

Great work so far, you are definitely on the right path
MAke sure you pick up a lower turbo heat shield from the junkyard, those definitely make a difference in under hood temps

Thank you very much. I am just going to work on this car little by little, and make sure I do everything right the first time. I always believe if you take care of a car it will do the same to you.

It definitely is going to be! But at the end I am sure I will be happy with the results.

I truly have no idea why the PO did what he did. I am just happy it was all cosmetic things he did to it, and not go crazy with a hacked up intercooler kit. Engine wise its very solid and relatively untouched!

Its rare to see someone who has the mindset as you do when first owning a DSM. Most wants to just mod away....then call it a POS when s*&t starts breaking. You have a bright DSM future ahead of you! L O L

Thank you for the kind words! LOL Most people completely ignore the maintenance of things because "it doesn't add horsepower bro!" I think completely different! I would much rather have a healthy functional engine, than a shitty leaking one!

Well I was supposed to redo my headlights today. But I spent most of day at 2 different Pepboys trying to get an alternator, power steering and ac belt since I will be doing my timing belt tomorrow. I was extremely happy because there was only one Pepboy who was willing to price match with RockAuto, I practically stole the belts from them LOL.

I also opened up my care package from ExtremePsi and RockAuto to ensure everything was given and correct. As always, they did not let me down. I chose to run Gates everything, because in the past their parts have NEVER let me down. As long as the install is done correctly, theres no reason why the parts will not work. The fact that I am a broke college student also plays a factor!

I was able able to sand and polish the front signal lights and install them. Here is a little before and after.

I also completely forgot to update you guys on my rear end situation. I cleaned all of the lights I found at the junk yard, and the end result is amazing. This is how the rear should look of a DSM.

More to come tomorrow! It is timing belt day!

Well I did it!!! :applause: I successfully did my very first timing belt and water pump install in my entire life. And it only took like 10 hours! Hey I know thats a very long time, but I was just taking my time with every single little thing. I especially took the time to clean as much as I could while I was down there.

I intentionally left the engine covers off just to make sure there were no issues. I plan on installing them again either tomorrow or Saturday now that I know there are no leaks of any sort.

Next I am going to try and fix the wiring for the oem fans because the PO just connected the cooling and ac fan into one plug. I am going to intent soldering for the first time too

Good job sir! Take all the time you need....whatever it takes to get it done right. You don't want to be replacing bent valves! L O L

Bad News everyone, the car must of skipped timing because there is a loud ass ticking noise coming from the engine. I feel like the valves took a shit. I dont know how this could have happened because it was just running cherry. I went to start it this morning and it simply wasn't cranking over. Once it did, I heard the loud ass tick.

I am stumped what to do at this point. I do not have the time or money to invest into the rebuild of the head. Unless I am able to find a decent price rebuilt one, I think my only option will be to sell it . I take full responsibility for what happened and cant blame anyone but myself.

What Maui said. Ive had instances where it made that noise due to off a couple of teeth. And was fine once retimed.

The key is to learn from mistakes. Go through it 100% and check your work. Verify proper tension on the hydraulic tensioner as well...if it isn't adjust properly and its loose...the belt will jump

Okay everyone. I may have made a rash decision but I was just so sad and angry at the same time I did not know what to think. Especially hearing a very loud tick noise, made me think of the worst. So heres an update. After setting "TDC" manually, the cams and rear balance shaft (I think thats what it is) are still aligned properly. It is only the front balance shaft that is off by like 2-3 teeth...I have no idea how it moved especially since that is the easier one to align.

Any opinions on how much damage could have been caused by that?

Thanks for the calming words and advice also.

The oil pump makes a tick noise with the covers off. You can hear it pretty audibly coming from under the car.

The tensioner pulley being over rotated could also cause the tensioner arm to click against the hydraulic tensioner. Inspect the gap between the tensioner arm and the hyrdaulic tensioner. To be within spec the grenade pin should be able to slide in and out, if not be only slightly raised little higher than the hole for the line up for the pin

So check the tensioner gap, and also the oil pump makes a tick as it builds pressure

Balance shaft and oil pump alignment are only important in the aspect that they eliminate engine vibration. Does not affect anything else

OKay everyone, a guy came and put his money where his mouth was and simply made me an offer I could not refuse. :sosad:. He says that he will come tomorrow with a tow truck to take it as it sits (minus the wheels). I just want to say thanks to everyone who saw this thread and made their comments and gave advice.

If he does end up flaking on my I will ensure to follow chrysler kid's recommendations. You guys are great! :dsm:
