My project just started and I am considering some options, I just wanted to throw out some costs and see if they are in line with what others have paid.

Shell (FWD 98 Talon 85kmiles)
$1200 :talon:

4G63T Engine cost and install (6 or 7 bolt)
$4k (Would include some upgrades) (Engine with about 40k miles)

I suck as a mechanic so I am having a shop do this all for me. I am getting the shell but they are doing the engine and install. What are the biggest risks for me? I assume getting a POS engine.

Any input from previous builders is wanted!

I had a 95 Talon TSI that I bought and built up as much as the stock T-25 could handle. ~250 hp or so. I want a good "family car" so I am not going beyond what a T-28 can handle. What benefit will I gain by going with an upgraded Tranny? (Will an upgraded Tranny avoid Crankwalk?)

I am still a firm believer that the odds of crankwalk are very very slim!

4k for a motor...damn i'll build you one

$4k sound excessive for a moderatly built motor, Tranny, and Install of all components?

If anyone out there knows of a cheaper builder/installer in the Ohio general area let me know.

didn't say trans was included in that u said 4k for motor and install

why would you want to "restore" a FWD platform? IMHO any broken dsm chassis that ISN'T awd, is parts for a dsm chassis that IS.

Spend money in the right areas and you'll have twice as much fun. $1200 + $4000= $5200. For that $5000 you could have got a AWD that would still smoke "that" FWD project car in no time.

I vote ney on proceeding unless your just a FWD fanatic with a lot of money.

The post above is sure to piss some FWD guys off... LOL , but in all honesty, you're right... you're throwing money out the window... IF you're dead set on that shell... save some cash and just buy a used stock 6bolt running motor, do a evo3 16g,fmic, some 660s, a maft and put the other 2k in your pocket.. you'll be a LOT happier with the end result if you went this route... that t28 is IMO a waste of money :thumbdown GOOD luck in whatever path you choose

T-28 :thumbdown
FWD for a track car :thumbdown
FWD for just a daily driver with some guts is perfectly fine but if you're shooting for a 1/4 number or want to use it for autoX, forget it.

The evo3 16G would be a much better choice for a turbo upgrade. Put a good clutch in while the engine is out. Do the head gasket and timing belt and have the head pressure checked. I'd have the entire thing checked and rebuilt but I know that get's expensive. I just wouldn't trust a second hand engine when investing that much into a project...
