i started my new motor and new setup the other day and i noticed i had oil squirting through the turbo on the exhaust side, I called pte and they said the reason its doing that is because A. Crank case ventilation or B my Oil drain line isnt big enough.

I checked the crank case vent and it looks good. I checked the Oil drain line and i have a 8an line that has no kinks in it at all its basically a straight down tube straight to the oil pan, it has a little bend in it but not much at all to restrict anything. Any Ideas on what else it could be??

Im assuming its a ball-bearing version. Are you restricting the oil feed? Ball bearing turbos require much less oil than a standard journal bearing turbo.

I use an 8AN and have NO problems after 2500 miles or so on my JB pte 5858. If you are DBB, then def run the reuired restrictor. God i hope mine doesnt do this....

CC pressure at idle wouldnt make any sense. Unless you have unbelievable blow by or bad valve seals or something crazy.

How much rtv did you use on the oil pan where the drain bolts on? Ive heard of it clogging the line.

Un hook the bottom drain on the turbo, have someone crank it and make sure oil flows out, then check your drain line. 8an is not too small.

If the turbo is new, it's virtually impossible for this to happen unless you have some type of drain restriction which can come as a physical blockage or too much crankcase pressure. Make sure your factory PCV system is working properly or your valve cover vents freely into a vented catch can.

My crank case is venting into a vented catch can and it is a journal bearing turbo, I didn't put much rtv on the pan but I will pull the line tomorrow and make sure it's coming out. It blew by so much I had it coming out of my exhaust : ( but pte said it won't hurt the turbo at all so idk?

Also I have all new seals and valves in the head the head was fully rebuilt with a 5 angle valve job seals valves springs etc

Dude, if you have that much oil pumping through out the turbo, i gotta say, that does not bode well for the turbo seal. Sound like you either have a COMPLETELY blocked drain, or the turbo is DOA and needs new seals. I mean, it came out the tail pipe ? Like THAT much oil??? Thats alot
Check your drain asap. I sure hope its the drain for your sake. I believe PTE is wrong, that much oil going out the hotside will indeed damage the bearing. But if it wasnt idle long maybe theres still hope.

Was this on first start up? Did you prime it before the first start? Hope it’s not DOA. I love PTE turbos, that 6266 is super bad! Good luck.

Sorry everyone for not posting pics last night like i said i would. I got hit yesterday am some Jacka** Blew through a red light and hit my new truck and spun me around 4 times Snapping my rear driveshaft, and half shafts Snapped my leaf springs on the passenger side crushed the box and the rear cab folding my bumper over on its self my body guy says There's atleast 28.000 in Damage so i'm hoping my insurance will say its totaled but i doubt it since its still work 47,000 : (

This was the first start up and yes the motor was primed before i started it up.

Ok so the turbo is junk, Now i have to tear it back off the new motor and get ahold of pte Monday. I put a new drain line on it "12an" cleaned all the oil up that was from the first start. Got everything ready and started it up and it blew even more oil out of the exhaust. While it was idling i went and looked at the turbo and the turbine wasnt spinning at all tried to spin it with a screw driver. It spun a little then stopped while all this i had oil dumping out of my dump tube and spraying out of my exhaust.

Im not verry happy about all this and im going to make it aware when i call pte on Monday, This is a bran new turbo that took them 4 1/2 weeks to build and when i called them the first time they said it was a mistake on my part and that there was no way it was a bad turbo. So not only did i have to clean ALL THE OIL up the first time but now i have to do it again and its even worse this time..... GRRRRR

Ok, thats it, im going with a holset 40 when i upgrade, no question now..... ####in pte, no wonder justin hates them!
Thats such a shame. Sorry to hear it. If they wont warranty it then remember: its still a JB and can be fixed pretty cheap. Send it off to Jusmx141 or one of the guys on here that rebuild.

Please keep us posted on all the details when dealing with PTE. Alot of us have their turbos and would like to know how they treat a customer. Good or bad.

Have you had issues with pte before?

IF you can get the parts. PTE, like a handful of other brands, likes to do strange things to certain models of their turbos...like using odd-width journal bearings that requires you to send the turbo to them to be serviced. I'm not even servicing PTE turbos any more unless it's for a close friend who got stuck with one- it's just not worth my time or aggravation. Someone else can put up with losing money for a warranty repair when it blows again in 1000 miles or less.

I've literally thrown turbos together with used parts for friends just to get them up and running and had them last longer than new stuff from PTE. This guy's experience is a fine example.

Ok sounds good ill let you all know what they say tomorrow after I talk to someone there. It's a bran new turbo I understand things happen but when I called them both times I was told there's no way it could be a bad turbo so I made a huge mess twice for no reason that's why I'm so upset about the situation. First time it took me 2 hrs to clean all the oil up but this time it's alot worse so it'll take even longer....

Wow jusmx I wish I woulda talked to you before I bought the turbo, I did alot of research and alot of ppl like their turbos alot. O well you live and learn from your mistakes, I just hope they stand behind their mistakes and make it right...

OK everyone i told you all i would let you know how today went if they contacted me. They Contacted me but it was through email.... They sent me a email at 3:pM and here is what the email says.......

Cory,
Do you remember who you spoke with? Have you tried contacting Mike Huml about the issue's you are having? What are you trying to accomplish by getting ahold of us right now?

WOW REALLY?!?!?!? Let me remind you, i sent PTE a email telling them IN DETAIL what was going on with the turbo and how i had contacted 2 different people from PTE and told them what was going on and They gave me a couple ideas to try out and Told me how "THERE'S NO WAY IT'S THE TURBO" I then went on telling them on the Second start up of the motor it ended up making even worse of a mess then the first time, Then i told them while it was idling i ran up and looked at the Turbine and it wasn't even spinning. i decided to take a little screw driver and see if i could spin the compressor wheel and it spun maybe 1/8th of a inch then came to a complete stop. I then went into full detail about how this was a BRAN NEW TURBO on a Bran new built motor and how last Thursday was the FIRST time this motor has been turned over and its the first time this TURBO has had oil in it etc... It was a pretty long email about the turbo and then i asked how i go about sending the turbo in to have it looked at and that is how they reply back to my email???

Mike Huml is the guy i purchased EVERYTHING from for this entire build including the turbo, Mike is a AWESOME guy he went way beyond his duties while this whole process of my build to help me out in anyway. He owns Built4g63 "Check out his site i recommend this business to everyone. Anyways PTE in that email they sent me was basically trying to take their mess up and point blame at Mike because i bought the turbo from him and gave him my money. Keep in mind when he received my money he contacted PTE and they built my turbo from scratch, It took 3 1/2 weeks from start to finish of the turbo so basically what I'm saying is Mike Huml had absolutely nothing to do with the making of this turbo.

I contacted Mike today and he was Kind of upset after i told him everything that has gone on with this turbo and all my conversations with PTE. He said he would contact PTE personally and get something figured out and he would get back to me by tomorrow and let me know what they have to tell him.

So i guess i will have to wait and see If Mike was able to get ahold of anyone at PTE and see what they have to say to him about this whole ordeal. As of right now the turbo is pulled out and sitting on my shop floor waiting for someone to tell me to ship the turbo back.

That's where I'm at as of right now, i will post tomorrow what i hear from Mike when he calls me. He said if they pull the same Crap with him that their doing with me then he will ride together and go knocking on their door step.. LOL Don't tempt me right now i seriously would. LOL

PTE's ball bearing lineup seems to be far more reliable among users- these problems only seem to plague journal bearing owners who oil the turbo exactly as instructed only to have it fail....then PTE will pin the blame on the owner when it's sent in for warranty. Of course, using customers as their R&D department is nothing new to PTE.

Garrett Turbochargers and the Truth - Yellow Bullet Forums

Very good read, I spent almost an hour reading both threads. Although I dont have any real world experience with PTE, it definitely makes me want to steer clear of their newer designs.

But Holy shit, how can a company get away with doing that to its customers. Im mean hooking up a turbo via their specs and it still have it fail is your fault? AND CHARGE THEM TO FIX IT WHEN ITS UNDER WARRANTY!!! Omg...im fixing to have a coronary LOL.

I mean If spent $900 plus on that something that falls on its face and shits its pants as soon as I install it and they tried to pull that on me. I.....I would probably go down there and mentally, verbally and physically assault someone LOL.
Sorry to hear what your going through with them bro. I hope it pans out for you

Can't speak for sure on their turbo internals, but I did read a post on another site a while ago that linked their wastegates to China as the country of origin- whether or not they were actually built and assembled there or the parts came from there and then assembled here wasn't discussed....so take that for what it's worth. ;)

I've personally witnessed Chinese turbos that lasted longer than PTE turbos, so take that for what it's worth as well. ROFL

Well its not looking so good. I got ahold of Mike from Built4g63.com and hes tried contacting them for the last 2 days and they haven't got back to him yet so who knows what is going to happen with this turbo. GRRRRR i would rate PTE's cutomer service at a 2... 1 being absolutely worthless and 10 being amazing...

Only ever dealt with them one time, and that was on a customer's 6776 that they "modded" so Garrett parts could not be used. He's a nice local fellow and I wanted to help him out so I dealt with PTE for him figuring they'd be a little more competent when dealing with someone who knew what they were talking about.

I was quoted less than $200 for the rebuild before I sent it; by the time I got it back they hit me up for $367 because they didn't know it was a big-shaft turbo despite me telling them that in the initial inquiry, plus they replaced the seal plate which didn't even need replaced because I tore the turbo apart myself before sending it to them and inspected everything. They also charged me for return FedEx shipping despite me including a prepaid UPS return label...they took that off the bill after I bitched.

So, yeah- customer service = 2. LOL
