im out of ideas been searching the forums for this problem. im trying to get a 93 laser non turbo to run after doing a head gasket replacement. it turn over fine before then start to act slow. it got to the point that it turn over then the starter starts to smoke seems like its not fully engaging i know this car should have a 7 bolt but it has a 6 bolt in it im not sure if that a reason for this problem also the flywheel looks new from what i can tell. the car sat for 5 plus year and not sure what the old owner all did to this car any ideas thanks

If your having issues getting the car to start pull the plugs and see if the cylinders are full of water. If the head gasket wasnt installed correctly it could be filling the cylinders with water and hydrolocking the motor. Pull your plugs and try cranking it over if its got water in the cylinders it will come out. If no water see if the starter is possibly bad. Take it off and have it bench tested. If the car has sat for 5 years this could be the problem.

while you got the plugs out id check mechanical timing as well as if you have spark. if you can get a hold of a compression gauge then id do that also. check all of your electrical connectors to make sure that they are plugged in and the plug wires to make sure you have the firing order right.

the cylinder nearest the cams is number 1 followed by 2, 3, and 4. and i believe firing order is 1342. if you have spark, fuel and compression it should definately start unless ignition timing is off and/or mechanical timing. hope this helps you out

thanks all there wasn't no water but blow it out anyways i got the starter tested they said was fine. im going recheck spark tomorrow i sure my cas it set right any can tell a way to make sure?
thanks
