I have a :dsm: 98 Spyder that I'm putting back together, I bought a shell to put my engine in.(had a :talon: Talon Tsi but the body rotted out, its no longer safe  ). I've got the engine and tranny out and getting ready to put it in the Spyder. Its been fairly easy (spyder auto and the talon stick) but i was in a junk yard yesterday and saw an 90 GSX. No title to go with the car and it had been stripped of its head and turbo, but the tranny and AWD system were still intact. I can purchase this car for fairly cheep but before i do, I wanted to double check a couple of things. I understand that there is a difference between a 6 bolt and a 7 bolt motor, i have a new flywheel and clutch for the 7 bolt. If i were to use the bellhousing from the GSX would it bolt up to my 7 bolt and would there be enough clearance withing the bell housing to keep my clutch from my Tsi? Also would the drive axles fit or would they need to be replaced? I'm still new at tuning but i can diagnose and fix problems fairly well. I want to figure if I'm getting in over my head, I would be grateful for any help you can give.

Ken

I dont have any mods yet, everything is stock.

thats not an answer to the question he asked though... he wants to know if his 7 bolt engine, with his 7 bolt bell housing will work with the 6 bolt drivetrain...

my question is, if the car already has a block ( you said it was just missing the head and turbo) why not build that block up instead? if you bore it out everything should be fine, assuming the oil pan is ok...(and you use whatever internals were going to go into your 7 bolt, minus the crank..) although it sounds like you have a lot of new 7 bolt parts so i doubt youll like this idea, but this is all i could offer since i dont know an aswer to your actual question... sorry

The number one piston looks like it exploded and the sleave is badly damaged. I dont have a press to exchange the blocks and the 7 bolt is already to go. I know i'll need to get a new flywheel and clutch but other than that i dont see why not. People take a 6 bolt engine and mount it with a 2gen trans, i figure it will work in reverse. Maybe someone could link me measurements to a 1 gen?

I'm assuming that your TSI is FWD.The FWD flywheel is bigger in diameter than an AWD flywheel. If you had 7bolt AWD flywheel the trans would bolt up to your 7bolt motor, but it would not bolt into your car.The front and rear motor mounts are on the trans on 2gs and on the block on 1gs.That's why you can put a 2g trans in a 1g and a 1g motor in a 2g and not vice versa. The rear differential is not even close.Stick to FWD

hey, that car sounds familiar! :thumb:
hope everythings going OK with it and i hope you can get the awd conversion eventually. keep me updated on how things go. i do still miss that open top on warm days. :thumb:
