hey all, this is my first post after reading this site for about 2 years now. ok, a few months ago my 92 eclipse was blowing blue smoke out the exhaust like you wouldnt believe and oil got in the anti-freeze. my first reaction, blown headgasket. the first thing i did was take out the spark plugs and all 4 of them were covered in oil, so i took off the head and behold, the head gasket was blown in 4 places, my next reaction was to look for cracks in the block and head, none, then i checked for warpage, none on the block or head, but for good measure the head was sent to a machine shop and while it was there it was check for cracks and the valves looked at, all OK. i put on a new 4 layer metal head gasket from NAPA, replaced all my other gaskets and seals with brand new ones, when i went to start it up blue smoke was still comming out the exhaust, so at first i thought i would let it idle for a while since i just replaced all that stuff so id let it break in, 20 minutes later smoke was still comming out the exhaust so i thought it could be my rings. i sprayed the edges of my pistons with a little PB blaster, since thats what my mechanic teacher told me to do, and i let it sit for 4 days, after it started up, yet more smoke. so what do all you guys think? oh yea, when i thought the head gasket blew the car had a horrible idle and would surge and stall randomly. while i was taking off the head i noticed 2 out of the 3 vacuum lines were melted so i replaced them, and after i got it back together it still idles like crap, around 450-500, and random stalls. any help or ideas would be appreciated

Your rings may be bad
Your turbo seals may be bad.
Did you clean the intake tract while you had everything off?(of course you did)
The shop may have installed the seals incorrectly.

Good luck
regards

or, since it seems like you drove it when the gasket was bad and it was smoking, i bet you that there is left over oil in the exhaust manifold and pipes. can u drive it? drive it, prefarably on the freeway to let it clean itself out. and you can always check your oil and anitfreeze again...

i have driven it around a parking lot, thats about it, and after the head gasket went and it started smoking i didnt drive it. i check the whole head out after i got it back and it was all ok, i prolly sould of had them put in new lifters because i am getting so pissed off at that damn ticking noise too :D ill drive it on the highway and see what hgappens, if it doesnt clear up im taking the engine back out

I agree with bad rings. Do a dry compression test. See how much pressure you have then do a wet compression test with oil. Don't start the car, just crank it.

a bad oil pump could put oil in the coolant...? Also have you done a compression test with the new HG installed? A wet vs dry test?

ok, i just gopt back from visiting my family and went to work on my car again after letting some pb blaster soak in for a week. i started it up and it idles fine and no smoke was comming out. then 5 minutes later my idle dropped to 400 and smoke started comming out again. i decided to use a snap on scanner to look for codes before i got my hands dirty and hope i found a code, but the scanner said the computer couldnt communicate with it, wtf!?!?!
i took out the spark plugs and there was no oil on them, so if the rings were bad wouldnt that let in enough oil to get the spark plugs a little covered in it? my mechanic teacher says it might be valve seals, what do you all think? i diddnt have enough time to finish a compresison test today since after my 3rd time cranking the engine i found out i needed to get a new valve for it since it wont hold.

here are the results of my compression tests.

cylinder 1 2 3 4

wet 155 135 96 117
dry 140 135 80 92

tell me any thoughts, i am half way done preparing the engine to be removed

your telling me the shop didn't do a compression test on your vavles??? Dats odd very odd...hmm...I guess I've always told them when I had heads done to check that shit out...

it never really occured to me to actually tell them to do that :( i guess i just assumed that it would be ok

ok, tomorrow im dropping out the engine and tranny from under the car, ill tell ya how it looks. and while the tranny is out... does anyone sell synchro rings for our cars? imy tranny grinds really going into second from first, unless i double clutch, and that is a pain in the ass to do all the time
