I recently changed my water pump and decided to do all the timing maintenence while i was at it. When I finished up and started the car it idled horribly. Symptoms were jump in rpms, and almost stalling out. Well I pulled the code and it said timing was off 1 tooth or more.. DERR.

So I redid the timing and checked it multiple times to see that it was aligned before i started it again. Timing marks all line up and it idles almost loppy sounding and i think I can almost hear pinging.. I pulled the spark plugs and they all were wet. I looked in the cylinders and didnt see any marks on the tops of the piston heads, but when i pulled #3 ( 3rd from the left) smoke came out of it... OMG

NOTE: I don't have the alternator hooked up to the car and i was running it off the battery for like 20 seconds. I figured tht would be ok, but maybe the battery isnt putting off enough spark to burn all the fuel and tht is why it is running bad? I just didn't want to have to put the crank pulley back on and put the alternator belt back on...Im sure I bent valves, but is there any way to check this w/o a compression test?

UPDATE*
I hooked the alternator up and tried to start the car. At first it ran for about 30 seconds and then I shut it off. It idled horribly almost loppy sounding and boggy again.

I tried to start it up again, and it would start and then die almost instantly. I pulled all of the plugs and they still smelt like gas as if it was flooded.. does any one have ANY ideas why my car is potentially flooding itself?

I took all of the plugs out, unplugged the injectors, and unplugged the coil pack and turned it over to try and get the extra fuel out. Then tried to start it again, and still no luck at all.

I have the same problem with my car right now. it jumped timing then i reset it and it was a tooth off. When you changed your timing belt did you check to see if the tensioner was bad? ### that well mess with your timing. but check to make sure your getting spark on all the plugs. If no spark well hopefully thats your only problem. otherwise it could be the valves....hopefully not

Best way to check spark is to have someone turn over the car, and put a plug in each wire and look for a spark correct? I had thought That maybe I wasnt getting enough spark or something and that is why there was all the extra fuel in the cylinders, but i wasn't sure the best way to check tht.

P.S. Is there anyone in Twin Cities, MN area that may be able to help me, or knows of a good shop?

I was wondering, If say my timing was off at first, and then i set it properly, but I didn't reset the ECU in between fixing it, could that throw off the CPS or anything? I asked for some help on my local SportCompact forum , and one of the posters suggested that the CPS could be getting a false TDC reading because I didn't reset the ECU
