problem boosting in 1st gear

I have a 90 talon tsi awd. When I'm in first gear, and try to make boost it will boost to around 5-6 psi. Then the car back fires, and bucks till I let off. I just replaced the coil pack. When I had the old coil pack in the problem was worse, and I had the same problem in 2nd-3rd gear. Now the car pulls great in all gears except 1st.
Before my clutch went out I had the stock 450's, evo9 fp, nt-fpr, and stock eprom chip. It ran great with this setup before I changed it. Now I have 550cc inj. mitsu specialties chip for 550's, stock mas, and turbo fpr. I have noticed really high timing compared to other people on here. I have seen it as high as 40, and I'm logging with mmcd.

Do you think it would cause the problem in 1st only? Why not other gears? I haven't done one since I put my new transmission in.

you sould give it a blt... also make sure that your wastegate arm is connected and not unhooked...!!!

Waste gate arm is connected, although I noticed a little exhaust coming out of the dump tube at idle. Why would the waste gate arm contribute to the problem? I'll get to the blt 1st thing tomorrow. It would be nice if i could solve this. The car feels great besides this.

It is very hard to produce more than 9-10psi in first because there isn't enough load and enough gear length to achieve full boost. And your wastegate leaking will cause the car to underboost because needed turbo pressure is leaking when its not sealed all the way.

I understand the wg leaking will result in increased lag. I still don't know why it would cause back fire and bucking at around 5 psi or 3000 rpm. Thanks for the replys

My plugs were replaced early this year. I haven't replaced the plug wires. I got the car last august, and the wires look fairly new. I'll do a blt, and then replace plugs if the problem continues.

Okay guys, I did a blt this morning, and found 2 huge boost leaks. I fixed them up. I still have to order a new biss O-ring, and tb seals. After that I wont have anymore leaks. I did forget to mention I am running un-circ bov right now. The reason being I need to find a rubber hose to fit the position the bov is in. I took the car down the road, and there was a huge improvement, but it still has the problem. It doesn't occur as much, and it will boost fine in 1st most of the time. Could it be running to rich? My o2 sensor stopped cycling for some reason. On a full throttle pull the timing is sitting at around 19-20 degrees. Is that okay?

Okay, I'm still having the problem. I'm starting to think its the chip i put in. If you have a 2 step on the chip will it do it in only 1st or second if you don't have the clutch wire right. It acts just like a 2 step when sitting still. It builds boost and all. When i first installed the chip there was no sign of this. I could rev to the moon.
