NEw here :) I am buying my first DSM this weekend. Its a 90 GSX 5 spd :) ahh to have a 5 spd again. happy day!

Well this thread is to ask what preventative maintanance I should do on this car when I get it. The engine has been replaced recently (within a few months) new timing belt, new head gasket. doesn't burn any oil, sounds nice and pulls very hard when the boost comes in.

I am thinking:
Spark plugs
Wires
check timing belt tension and tensioner
oil change
Fix possible boost leaks (smelled a bit rich at one point when I was testing it)

Anything else that can be thought of?

Also whats the best way to pinpoint where rattles are coming from?

The things that I KNOW have to be fixed are the axle (front passengers side goes thud thud when driving) and needs a new power steering pump/hoses.

Hope I explained enough thanks everyone! :D :D

Well, the most important thing to check would be the timing belt, and if it still has them the balance shaft belt.

I'd start by replacing any rubber hose that is under the hood such as the radiator hoses, vaccum lines, etc. Check for any outstanding recalls on your car.

Other things such as the fuel filter, air filter, etc. Change all the fluids including the rear differential, transfer case, and transmission.

As for the rattles, you may just have to get used to it. 1G's like to rattle and squeek, its the nature of a 16 year old car. But, the best thing to do is to get it up on a lift, and start wiggling things until you can pinpoint what it is.

Wish I had access to a lift ;)
The only rattle that it has is at high RPM and it sounds like its at the drivers side. I'm not sure what it is, sounds like its just something that is rattling from vibration but im not entirely sure. It does have a small boost leak could that cause detonation? and if so, could you hear that?

thx for the replies!
