Power wire got caught/cut between fuel pump cover and tank - what is damaged now?

Started with a running/driving car (94 GSX). Rewired fuel pump and put in a new Walbro 255, but then every time I went to start the car, the inline fuse would blow. Then I bypassed the rewire to rule that out - still no power to pump. I removed the pump and found that the power wire for the pump got caught in between the fuel pump cover and the tank. The wire was cut, and so was directly contacting either the cover or the tank - that would cause a short, right?

What else could that damage? Cause I repaired the wire and reinstalled the pump making sure it didn't get caught again, and I can't get power to the pump now with or without the rewire hooked up....???

I did the same thing on my girlfriend's 1st gen . It happens. But did you try just running a power and ground straight to the pump to see if it kicks on that way? Either a blown fuse or relay more than likely.

I did not! The car is at my mechanic's shop which is on the other side of town and I'm planning on getting over there tomorrow so I'll add that to my ongoing list of things to check. Thanks

Yeah if you just take the pump out and hook it up to a 12v source then you know that you probably have an issue with a fuse or a relay.

There is an mpi relay for the fuel pump in the passenger side of the center console that may have fried from shorting out the pump. I would check for power before the relay and after to help determine if thats the case.

Thanks yall! The pump definitely works when connected to power. I'll be taking a look at that relay and anything else I can soon - so if anyone has any other things I can add to my list of things to check please let me know!

Check the #1 fusible link (big plastic fuses) in the underhood fuse box and make sure it didn't blow. Infact you may as well test all the fuses while you're in there, but that feeds the MPI relay, which feeds the pump. Chances are it's blown.

Tested the fuel pump/MPI relay and it was fine....ran pump with the fuel pump test connector behind battery and it worked.....powered pump with rewire hooked up and worked fine....so I reinstalled the pump and everything is now working. I'm guessing that I was getting a short at a repair on the fuel pump cover. One of the studs broke off so I drilled and tapped for a screw, and redid that whole fix better before reinstalling it and that's the only thing that changed, so...must've been that.
