Well i took my power steering pump off and looped the lines on the build im doing, drove it around the neighborhood a few times and thought - what a pain in the ass this is. I definitely don't want it in the front like it is stock so i figured i would try putting it in the rear where the alternator relocation usually goes.

there was not hardly any thought put into this at all, i was just using the ac compressor bracket as a basic design so it would hopefully clear everything.

the "tack" welds were done without gas (didn't know i was out until i got home) on mild steel wire, so the look terrible and they are barely holding everything in place. the bottom i would obviously drill out and just use the bolt holes in the block. and i wouldn't use this flimsy angle iron on the final version.

I don't think there are any real advantages to mounting here except cosmetic reasons. i just don't like it where it is, the power steering is prone to leak on the alternator and kills them , its ugly , and it allows you to remove the large bracket on the front and either cut the motor mount or run a 2g style motor mount.

this is a very rough design, it would be held in place to be removable, use fittings with braided hoses, and i would have to find a place to mount a reservoir.
 
Did you weld it directly to the block? Thats the same place I put my alternator but I used the A/C tensioner (2g)and just built brackets off of that to bolt up the alt. It's a pain to get everything to line up but make sure the pulleys are parallel to one another or it might chuck the belt or have excessive wear.
 
yea its welded to the block but like i said, i ran out of gas and the welds aren't holding well at all, they will grind off rather easy i assume. I also had a dead cordless drill so i didn't get to drill the holes out to bolt them like i wanted too.

This is also where the carrier bearing bolts so i would have to assure there is enough material there to where it bolts flush ( using a few washers on my current and its a pain in the ass ).

the pulleys were lined up, but either the iron is too flimsy or the welds are already coming apart, it started leaning.

the power steering bracket has a tensioner on it, so that should do the trick (i hope)

i am just a 23 year old kid with a wife and child who's father gave him his old welder, and im trying to have fun with it. hopefully be productive. so i wouldn't take any of my fab work too seriously

edit: didn't think about the engine mount at all ROFL i suppose i could run it off of the crank somehow if the mount is an issue.--- 2 minutes later: nvm should clear just fine.. i hope.

I dealt with mine on my 1g with looped lines, it's alright.


Mass produce these and sell them for 100$+ and you'd be a rich man!
 
haha for sure, and when running headstuds you can take the head off/on with the manifolds still attached without having to mess with brackets ( assuming you remove the front and cut the side )

edit: i am still working on this. i will try and get some metal to work with ( something strong enough to brace the pump and tension ) and some argon mix probably Thursday, and after i mount it on my car ( to check for final clearance ) i am going to have as delco cut my stock lines and crimp them to the new size. ( or make me some new hydraulic lines ) and try to find a belt.

i need to get a hold of a 2g , since they dont have the luxury of a manual steering rack replacement, this would probably make it look alot nicer without that ugly thing sitting right there where all the pretty things are (turbo , painted/shaved valve cover, adjustable cam gears exhaust manifold, assuming they are were pretty to begin with haha)

You have me thinking about dropping the power steering pump down from its original location to the alternator location (where my custom tensioner is right now)and using that as the tensioner for the water pump instead of the set up I have now.

Oh yeah if you use wood to dumby up brackets its alot easier to work with. If you make it from metal and you didn't get something measured correctly you may end up remaking all the pieces again and/or cutting apart pieces. It ends up being alot of cutting, grinding, and trying to clean off welds. That is if your talking about making brackets that bolt on then wood is a decent material to use.
 
You may want to check that when you put the belts on that they clear the timing cover at the oil pump gear. There's a bump out on the cover that covers the end of the shaft and nut.

huh? haha thats where the power steering is now. or you mean put the power steering AND the alternator in the back? that would be quite appealing.

i broke a shift fork in my transmission so i kind of put this to the side, but i have made a bracket that looks alittle better.
 
My clutch took a crap and am still trying to piece the car back together, repaint the car, I finished the engine bay. Just ran into other problems , I still want power steering =]
