Power Steering Issues. Weird.

My power steering pump recently died. So I purchased a re-manufactured power steering pump from advanced auto parts. Swapped them out, put on a new belt, tensioned it correctly added the correct amount of fluid and turned the steering wheel left to right and back again a couple times to get the air out of the system and I also replaced the return hoses that lead back to the reservoir. The pump still whines and also rattles, keep in mind this thing is about 5 days old. Any clues? I'm lost at this point. I went to advanced auto today and told them to get me a new one, so in 2 days I'll have a new pump so we will try it again but in the meantime anyone have any kind of idea?? Thanks

Does it whine/rattle only when you turn the wheel or all the time?

They both happen all the time but more when I'm turning the wheel.

Are you sure you have all of the air out of the system?

Yes I've burped the system before. When I get my new pump tomorrow I am going to clean the whole system. I keep you posted

Interesting, I have the same problem right now but my pump leaks out power steering fluid right from the reservoir, any thoughts...

Follow up: I put my new power steering pump in, cleaned the reservoir out, cleaned the reservoir filter, cleaned the lines, filled it up and burped the system. Works like new now.


MASMORE: Try taking out your reservoir and cleaning it out and carefully cleaning the mesh filter. I'm pretty sure that was the culprit for me.

At least you got yours fixed. My OEM PS pump replacement rebuilt only works above 2K, it also leaks oil. I have to call the Auto Supply I bought it from and ask them to get me another one. I have a feeling it is the pressure regulator inside is the culprit.

Hey its like $14 for the gasket kit from mitsu and you can rebuild it yourself, the vanes rarely ever go bad in them, just the rubber gaskets and o-rings.

Thanks for the info, I was actually leanning to rebuilding my own original pump since the remanufactured ones are crap. I have to locate a Mitsubishi dealer around my area.

I think the OEM rebuilt pump had a clog, because it is now working! I still have to get a the replacement due to oil leak. I don't want to replace another rebuilt alternator.
