Just a quick question I have owned many 5 speed dsm's and this is my first auto, so here is the question. I have a dash light that reads POWER in the center of the console what is this and why could this be on. Just a note I did do a search for this, also i have deleted my ABS and did the firewall clean up that alot of dsm guys do.

Are you talking the over drive button or a different one I press it and it stays on the over drive light turns on and off tho.

OD button on the left side of the shifter. "IN" activates the 4th gear which has the OD final output ratio and "OUT" deactivates the OD clutches.

"POWER" - adds power by unlocking the TC, esp for uphill driving.
"ECONOMY" - locks the TC when doing sustained highway driving for better fuel mileage.

Mainly, the "Economy" light gets burnt out due to it being on all the time, whereas the "POWER" light is seldom on (and most users don't know about this feature, let alone know how to use the "POWER" feature) and thus, when the button on the console is pressed in for "POWER", this light comes on.

Button next to the shifter on the console controls this feature.

This option was available for F4A transmission in all mitsu vehicles in the early 1990's build era.

Does this locking/unlocking change the shift aggressiveness? That's what I noticed most, a more aggressive shifting pattern when in power mode. I almost NEVER drove in ECO mode just because of how early the shifts were.

It can shift when the demand is needed-doesn't matter on if its in POWER or ECONOMY, just that the TC will not lock up in POWER mode.

If the throttle pedal is barely down, tranny will shift sooner. But more pressure on the pedal and the tranny will shift accordingly to torque demand, which is longer.

Older trannies had what's called, a throttle pressure linkage. It was linkage attached to the gas pedal that would run to the tranny to measure throttle pressure. Now it's the TCU that controls that throttle pressure.

I must have either been crazy or something was broken. Thanks!

To the OP. The button to change the mode isn't on the shifter, its on the base of the shifter, right under the radio basically.

1g turbo models do not have a lock up converter. The 1g N/T trans has a lock up converter.

I knew I remembered seeing this button in my base model Laser.

I affectionately called it my "Giant Frickin' Laser". Not as cool as "Sharks with Laser beams" but it was pretty cool nonetheless.

I agree with 007jimmy on the converter lock up, only the 1g n/t have that. So this cannot be the function of the switch.

If you read in the FSM. The Power/Economy button is two preset shift patterns, there are graphs displaying the patterns. One is for Performance and one is for Fuel Economy.

I miss that car.

So do the turbo 1gs have the button too then?

YES! I'm not crazy.

Here's another random off topic picture of my old Laser with a power button.

First time out of the shop in "Caruck" form.

Some people do the "blue wire mod" and link it to the button so when the tranny is in "Power" mode it also has full line pressure when it shifts. Could also link a NOS setup to it so going into "Power" arms (turns on) the system.
