So my 2g Talon TSi AWD snapped a timing belt this spring. Had the head rebuilt to stock specs, put it all back together, worked a few bugs out and she ran great. For a week and a half. Woke up one morning after putting just over 200 miles on the rebuilt head, started it up and it ran like a turd. Misfiring like crazy, couldn't keep it running, the whole nine yards. Then it refused to start at all. Thought it might be low compression but the car would randomly lose all electrical power in everything (radio, dash, everything). Went through many headaches trying to troubleshoot the issue, from the main ground cable to a new alternator to new fuses, came up with nothing. Still wouldn't start. It sat all summer (very sad, I know) and I finally got a second job at Belle Tire and one of my coworkers, a technician, agreed to work on it for me and figure out the issue. We pushed it in tonight and he got to work. He pulled the plugs out, looked like brand new. He had me crank it over with the plugs out and only cylinders 1 and 2 sprayed fuel out of the plug holes. We searched through the wiring diagrams and found the injectors get their pulse from the ignition suppression resistor. Someone over on DSMTalk asked a similar question (question about Ignition Suppression Resistor (Fuel Injector Resistor Box) - DSM Forums: Mitsubishi Eclipse, Plymouth Laser, and Eagle Talon Forum: DSMtalk.com) and I'm wondering if anyone here knows much about this component. If it goes bad, will it cause only the first two injectors to pulse? And would that have any connection to my losing power all throughout the car? I'm great with all things mechanical but when it comes to electrical issues, I'm Stevie Wonder in a windowless room with the lights off.
