I've got a 92 Eclipse GSX manual 5-speed with 2.0 engine. (no turbo)
I've been having an idling problem for some time. On a cold (or hot) start the engine will start at over 3,000 rpm, for 10 or 15 seconds. Then it drops to around 1100 rpm and starts to "pulse" up and down between 1000 and 1500 rpm. Sometimes after a long time running the "pulsing" lessens to around 1000 to 1200 RPM. The temp gauge is normal and there are no heat issues.
I was leaving a buddy's house and his son commented when I started the car, " Oh man, you should have that heat sensor replaced". Huh?
He said he has seen that symptom on some other Mitts and told me it was tightly tied into the whole computer/emissions environment.
If I remember correctly this started happening right after I had the computer replaced. When I told the mechanic about this he told me I had to drive the car for a while so the computer could re-set itself to my car's environment.
Unfortunately I then spent a couple years laid up in the hospital and am just now driving the car again.
I've checked for vaccum leaks and throttle linkage problem, and well just about everything else. Where is this heat sensor located and does this sound like a possible solution to my idling problem ?? I'm going to guess it's somewhere close to the coolant thermostat.
I LOVE driving the car and not being able to drive for the last couple years has been killing me.
I just realized from browsing some of my early posts here that this problem seems very similar to a similar problem I had in 2007. At that time it turned out to be something different involving a different part. An ECL or device I think.
Thanks for any help, Rich A
