possible damage when timing belt skips a tooth

Hey everyone, I have a 99 RS with the engine and the transmission rebuilt. I just bought it and the guy told me that the timing blet had skipped a tooth. So my question is: what is the worst damage this can cause to the engine?? what needs to be done (besides changing timing belt). I am planning on putting a new timing belt on it myself at college in the next few weeks so thats all. Thanks

you can just about always count on bent valves. and maybe some damaged lifters. I have seen in rare cases a TB jump just 2 or 3 teeth it had no valve train damage( if you can run a compression check or have one done for you that will tell the story)

Well one tooth shouldn't cause anything bad, internally, to happen. It may give less performance out of the engine, but over time it will cause build-up of carbon from incomplete combustion. So fix that as soon as you can. Do you know how to properly time a 420a?

I agree, one tooth shouldn't cause any immediate permanent damage. Often, though, gearheads will use the phrase "it skipped a tooth" as a euphemism for "it skipped several teeth and I have no idea how many." So look into that soon!

Thanks for the help, no I havent, but I did see a video on youtube on timing a eagle talon, it gave me an idea on how to, but Ill play it safe and tripple check everything when I do it, and in case I get stuck on something, ill post it here, and search on ALLDATA. Thanks

Yeah, waaaay back in the day one of my buddies had his like 3 teeth off of each cam and didn't damage anything. Damn thing ran like a crappy lawn mower.

i had the head off on mine and put it back it time and it was 1 or 2 teeth off and it never caused any damage but i fixed it right way.....

I hope that my valves arnt bent...I am crossing my fingers becuase I want to get it done by next month...there is an upcoming event over where I live and I really want it up and running...I know that I shouldnt rush it and I am double checking everything I do..thanks guys

thanks for the link..another discovery I made while changing my t-belt...is that it didint skipp at all....I found some metal strips between the crank sprocket and the belt..making my t-bemlt jam...thanks

Yes I believe that these fell from top of the engine..since my top timing cover wasnt there...thats what I think

In answer to the original post, I personally had experience with a timing belt skipping four teeth before I replaced it (I had no idea it had skipped that many until I tore it down!). I was lucky though, no damage done to my motor (although the car drove like a golf cart and stalled everywhere I went!). Definitely don't recommend anyone else try to drive a car after the t-belt has skipped four teeth, but in my case, everything turned out fine.

As for the metal strips between the crank sprocket...I'm at a loss for words as to how those could have gotten there? Hopefully you get them removed and everything starts running smoothly again...
