Ported and Clipped...is this common?

is it common to have a 14b ported and clipped ?? I might replace it with my stock 14b......how do i tell that i has been clipped..? will this be a significant upgrade? worht it?
 
Porting, yes.....clipping, absolutely not. If anything, clipping will probably ruin the 14B's efficiency because more airflow will be needed to spool the turbo- and a 14B makes only 405cfm @ 18psi.

Clipping is normally needed when running a compressor wheel that pushes alot of airflow into a small turbine. The turbine becomes a restriction; clipping reduces the backpressure to aid in flow at high boost.

I once rebuilt a customer's 14B that was clipped 15*....why the money was wasted on the mod is beyond me.
 
I was lookin at a 20g compressor wheel and TD05H housing (like a bastard 20g) to upgrade my 14b now. I already have a 7cm housing and was wondering when I do the upgrade would clipping the TD05H wheel help any? The car is an auto and will be daily driven most of the time.
 
Never clip any turbo, for any reason. It does completely demolishes efficiency.

Wouldn't this apply to putting a 20g compressor on a 14b cartridge. Sorry if I am wrong just tryin to learn. :thumb:

You'll need to change the oil shield on the turbo's CHRA as well if you're planning the upgrade- a 14B compressor wheel is flat-back, the 20G wheel is not.

As far as clipping the 20G's turbine- I had a close DSM buddy run an 11.79 @ 25psi on an unclipped TD05H 20G in his build 1G TSi AWD. It was his daily driver, and that setup made for one badass street car.

Some will say that a TD05H 20G over 20psi NEEDS to be clipped, but I haven't seen enough proof to say I agree.
 
Should I use the TD05H compressor housing or go with the TD06? Any links on where to get the oil shield?
 
There is a ton of voodoo bullshit you can do to turbos to make them perform differently, porting, and clipping as discussed are definately two methods. A 14b in a 6cm housing unported, tends to perform marginally well. A 7cm housing will help the 14b pull slightly harder up top, while taking a little away from the bottom end. Oh no, we are now effecting efficiency. Clipping a 14b is fine just drop it back into the 6cm housing and work some good porting into it, it will be kind of like using a 7cm housing. Technology has developed and clipping is way old school, but if your a cheap bastard and clever to boot, then clipping may be the way for you;) The AWD/NO Nitrous 14b 1/4 mile record is on a 6cm housing, lets think about this for a moment. I am maxing out Evo 560cc injectors on a bone stock 6-bolt motor and head, 44 psi base fuel pressure, 11:1 AFR at a mere 18psi of boost, I need more injector to turn the boost up. The 14b is alive and well, be cheap be fast.

The OP clearly stated he already has a 7cm2 housing, so he might as well just save $100 worth of clipping and use the housing he has instead of clip the turbine and reuse the 6cm2 housing.

Besides, wouldn't it be way cheaper and more fun to just port your own housing rather than tear the whole turbo apart to send the turbine out to be clipped at a cost of $100 plus shipping?
 
Justin, I am not trying to start a pissing contest, but maybe you should read the OP. If you are smart you can clip the turbo yourself. Its not easy, but I have done it, its just basic tools and time. I actually considered my own turbo rebuilding/porting/machining bussiness for a little while.

Sorry, I was referring to dsmconvict's question- I didn't realize the thread was partially highjacked.

How did you go about clipping and rebalancing a turbine yourself? This would be a very difficult procedure unless you had a lathe....hence it's easier to port.

Funny you mentioned your considered "business"....that's what I do. I have 42 different turbos on the shelf right now, as well as various customer's turbos too.


To anyone who thinks they want to try it, never try to clip a turbine without the proper equipment.
