Small 16g Ported/Clipped/polished?

OK i got this small 16g For $150. I believe its the Galant 16g, minimal shaft play i think its normal. The number is 49178-05200. Here are some pics i was wondering whats done to it. Sorry i'm kinda a noob. also what is ported clipped and polished what are the benefits how can i tell?

That is indeed the number for a small 16g.
Here is a picture of what porting is (on a different type of turbo, but you get the idea). This will give you greater airflow and therefore more power and less restriction on the exhuast side.

Clipping is removing the edges of the turbine blades to allow more airflow.

Small 16G's come with a 7cm2 turbine housing....yours has been ported.

Clipping wouldn't be necessary for the Small 16G. I can't see how the compressor wheel would come anywhere near exceeding the flow of the TD05H turbine.

That turbo has an Evo III 16G wastegate actuator, which has a little more spring tension. :thumb:
 
Yeah that would suck he said it had been rebuilt 4k ago. It seems to look pretty good. How much shaft play is normal? For a used turbo it seems fine it barley moves and it doesn't effect the spin. slight side to side no in and out the exhaust side is solid no play.
 
Shaft play is an ok indicator to bearing status, but not good for diagnosing oil seals. Up and down is worse than in out, and if both of those are normal and it spins freely, that's about as good as you can ask for in a used turbo. Put it on already!
 
There should not be any noticeable in/out play. That indicates a worn or damaged thrust plate, which doesn't tighten up with oil. Excessive in/out play will almost immediately cause the wheels to contact the housings because there is VERY little air gap (.004" in most cases) between the compressor / turbine vanes and the housings to ensure proper efficiency.

The journals are another story. It's almost impossible to find a used turbo with zero up/down play. Hell I've seen new turbos that had a scary amount of up/down play that were absolutely fine when they were on the car. When the car is running, oil is constantly being pumped into the journals. This should almost eliminate any gaps between the journals and the bearings, and the bearings and the shaft. You want a small amount of up/down play for proper oil clearance....as much as .012"-.015" or more is totally normal. As long as the wheels cannot contact the housing in any way, you're fine.

The best way to spot a turbine seal leak is to look at the turbine wheel. If the wheel appears dry and chalky, you're fine. If the wheel appears wet, the seal is leaking. A leaky turbine seal could have been caused by the previous owner sending too much oil pressure to the turbo (oil supply sourced to the filter housing instead of the head) or it could be a sign of a damaged seal.
