Ok...maybe i missed it when i searched for it earlier....

I know what carbon fiber is, how it comes in sheets, etc. but...what is the big hoopla about carbon fiber. What are the benefits for it, or is it just a fad? What's the deal guys? Thanks for the info.

Well, Carbon Fiber is popular for 3 primary reason.

1) It is the lightest material available to use for our cars exterior(lighter than fiberglass)
2) Not only is it the lightest, but it also the strongest. It is much stronger then fiberglass.
3) Looks cool from far away, and even better up close. (stealth like color)

These are reaons why carbon fiber is so famous to use.

I think this sums up why carbon fiber is the best:

Carbon fiber composites have amazing structural properties. Carbon fiber composites are ten times stronger than steel, yet are still five times lighter. In comparison to aluminum, carbon fiber composites are eight times stronger, two times stiffer, yet still 1.5 times lighter. Carbon fiber composites have superior fatigue properties to all known metallic structures, and when coupled with the proper resins, carbon fiber composites are one of the most corrosion resistant materials available.

On a side note. Does any company make a true carbon fiber hood, like with the underside being carbon fiber as well. Sorry to get off topic but I thought I would ask.

Think fiberglass but much tougher and typically lighter because it doesn't take as much material. Here's an easy example just for demonstration.

10lb fiberglass hood - 10lb carbon fiber hood - carbon fiber hood will be much stronger

equal strength hoods - fiberglass 10lbs - carbon fiber 5 pounds

Like I said it's stronger meaning you can either build a stronger item for the same weight or an item that's just as tough for less weight.

Formula 1 cars are made of entirely carbonfiber. The shells atleast. And i'd like to get an ENTIRE carbon fiber hood. Not just one where the top half is carbon fiber.

Edit: Fixed after I somehow typed Fiber Glass meaning to type CF

No they're made of entirely carbon fiber, and in some cases they're carbon/kevlar.

Get your own samples of the different kinds or just get some knowledge at www.fiberglast.com

I've had my VIS G Speed CF hood for about a week now and people look and stare it when I'm driving like it is pure gold or something.

Oh man i'm retarded. I ment to say entirely of Carbon Fiber. Silly mistyping.

I remember a while ago i saw in super street they had an all carbon fiber skyline. i think it was hks's time attack car. i also saw on top gear that the one zonda has a carbon fiber frame and many other things made from it.

When I had my tiburon I used to hang out at this forum called rdtiburon.com. And they had just starting making. CF hatches, fenders front and rear bumper, hoods, and door skins. even CF sunroofs. That would be a light ass car.

But anyways. A guy up got into a wreck, TOTALED the front end of the car. He had a CF hood that was on the car.. Didnt have a scratch. The thing flexed on impact then straightened itself back out.. Craziest thing I ever saw.. Very cool picture too..

Hks built two all carbon fiber bodied time attack cars neither were skylines.

One was an Altezza RS200 and the other was an Evo 8.
