Plastidipped my car.

i think the price of this is hardly considered a waste

if the car needs it sure but to do it just to do it I would consider a waste.

I'm thinking about two toning my 2gb with this stuff and have even experimented on a can with some just to see how it would work, it ad-hears to a can quiet well so I'm sure it will ad-hear to a clear coat without any prep other then washing the car. My issue is with it drying to the tape and then peeling up with the tape. Anyone have any ideas on how to avoid this? I'm not to excited about taking a razor blade to the stuff with it dry on the car as I don't want to damage the clear coat. Thoughts? Advice?

The only thing I could think of is if you remove all masking and remask in between each coat. Seems like way too much work if you're going to do a car though :hmm:

Well, it occured to me today, and with the help of the above post,:aha: why not just use multiple layers of tape? Im thinking that might do the trick, I guess we will see how she goes this weekend.

has anyone sprayed over body filler with this stuff. I just welded all the holes and seamed my evo 3 and body filled the engine bay in spots. just seeing if any one has tryed it yet other wise I will buy there primmer also to start with going with black since I sprayed it black 4 years ago in the engine bay

I did my engine bay with it. the factory body goop they used stayed kind of sticky for about 3 days but dried. i think the chemicals in the plasti dip kind of etches into the factory body filler and just takes a while to dry.

kind of on topic, but i was thinking of doing my car a diff color, now when you do that do you have to change/modify your reg. because of the diff color?

unless you want alot of shit if you get pulled over i would definitely change it on the registration.

washed the engine bay and it is drying right now used the air gun on it now the fan is on it to get it the rest of the way

Just FYI to anyone wondering what a surefire way to clean your plastidipped [whatever it is], make a mixture of 1 part simple green to 4 parts water. Use a microfiber cleaning sponge (blue and yellow ones sold at Walmart work brilliantly, $2 each and are machine washable). For washing my car I also had a sprayer attatchment on my garden hose. First park your car in the shade when doing this to avoid water spotting. Spray one section at a time with water and dunk the sponge into the simple green and water mix, then ring it out over the area your cleaning and scrub hard enough to get the grime off but not so hard as to do any damage to the Plastidip. Then hose off whatever suds are left and let it dry. Repeat the process for the rest of the car, preferably your washing as your going from the top down.

Also, is it possible to do my dash with this? i know spray paint is TACKY AS HELL, however considering the rubbery properties of this, wouldn't it be more flexible and actually hold up?

i did some storage cubby holes on my honduh with it yesterday, zero prep except cleaning, 3 coats. it is nice and flexible, i will post up or PM you in about a month or so to let you know how it holds up

my plan is to plasti dip the rear interior(wagon) and maybe the full exterior.

so if the primer is fully cured it is fine to spray plastidip on?

Just used this on my old beat to hell stock swirlies, and it turned out pretty good. All I can find around here is black though. If I find me some white, I think this is what I'll use as primer for my 2gb Talon bumper, and then paint over it with Radiant Fire red.

Thanks for the tip..this is probably the only thing that was holding me back from plasti-dipping my car..time to get to it! :) haha How long did it take you to do yours?

To spray my Talon it took me like 6-ish hours I think. I do have to respray the right side of my car tho due to the fact that I sprayed too far away and the Plastidip turned all gritty on me. So I just have to wait for another sunny day up here (Washington weather is so indecisive) and Ill clean her up and just spray some thicker coats on so I can get the smooth texture I want.

How does plastic hold up if you drop the object coated with it? Say, on the engine bay, how will it hold up if you drop a wrench on it?

a wrench would probably bounce off, the sharp end of a screw driver might make a deep scratch if it has enough weight/momentum behind it
i can go test out my theories once i get off my lazy ass....

edit: 10mm wrench from 2 feet did no damage, even landing open end down, that was 3 coats on a plastic surface.

After reading all the post in this thread, im convinced this is the best idea for me. Even the gf approves of the plasti-dip look haha.

So from what I've read, if I pressure wash the car. That's all the prep work I need to do?
