Sometimes it is just like that, Sorry...

No engine builder has a perfect record.

When you pop the head off, see if "6T" is cast on the valve heads on the combustion chamber side.

"6T" on the valve head will mean it is a mitsu valve.

If there is no markings on it, it is a replacement valve. Made by who knows, and who knows if it is a 1 piece vavle or a 2 piece valve.

IMHO if any 4g63T head comes thu my shop and dose not have the "6T" on it, I recomend getting a set of stainless steel or let me replace with reconditioned Mitsu 6T valves

Some overseas valves can be 2 poece, and that means the head of the valve is fused/weleded to the stem. This makes for a weak brittle valve, and not worth useing in a turbo engine.

no, it would be a little taller than the rest, the stem will get caught in the guide

Sounds like the Tensioner arms is jumping around on top of the hydraulic tensioner due to insufficient tension on the Timing belt.

Its not the belt tensioner or timing. That was one of the first things i checked and ive done about 100 of them ,so i can do those with my eyes closed. The car ran and idled perfect, it was just ticking really load until i changed the lifters.

Huh? what? Where did you get that from the op saying he sees a gouge in the top of his piston?

russell.... buddy.... damn.....

make a pot of coffee... get the tools out... go pull 4 or 5 bolts at a time, come in and warm up and repete.

But for the love of God, quit tryin to spin the bottom end over, you will just cause more damange.

with #3 piston gouged, you already know the head and the oil pan have to come off.

Take pics of the damage tho.

Thats lame....get out there and show us how hard core of a DSM'er you are!! you can have it off in a few hours!!

That depends, do you hve the 1g intake? There is a size differance between the 1g and 2g intake runner size.

You really need to pull thet #3 piston out to, and check the damage on that piston.

Jimbob... why are you pulling your head?

Having a similar issue to the op's. Im gonna pull the head to port the oil feed to see if helps with my lifters/ oil flow. While its off im gonna go head and check out my valves. Dont mean to thread jack but i have a similar setup and sound and at this point im kinda worried.

Jimbob.. better safe than sorry... let me know if I can help.

Right on! I have actually driven my car about 10-15 miles to do a good break-in. I was thinking the lifters would quiet down after a bit but nothing. I hope in doing so i didnt cause any damage! To the op, so you swapped over lifters and turned it over and bam! snapped valve? Did you prime/clean them before install? Ive heard of problems with "stiff" lifters not compressing and causing problems.
