DO I have to hone the cylinders when replacing piston rings? Dumb question but I just wanted to see if I could replace them without machine work.
Thanks

Its highly recommended, but not necessary

Will they seat? I'm moving out of state in five days and I have 30psi in #4 cylinder. I need to get my rings replaced to move my car with me. Will this work or will i do a ton of work and end up in the same boat?

Yes, ive replaced a few in the past... just make absolutely sure there is no scoring!

Alright. Thanks for the input. I will do a very extensive visual inspection before I decide not to hone, I just wanted to know if it was possible to replace them and have soild compression without honing. Thanks again.

They will not seat properly without a hone. Buy a cheap 3 arm cylinder hone at autozone and run it in each bore.

I just called and they are only 20 bucks. So I will go ahead and hone the cylinders like I should. Thanks everyone

Instead of doing the autozone cheapo you can also get a ball-hone. They cost around 80 dollars but do a far better job and is much more simple to use.

Yes you need to hone them.

I've used 3-M 07447 Red ScotchBrite pads to deglaze the nickel-plated bores in motorcycle cylinders for years as honing is not recommended for these applications. The past few cast iron automotive blocks I've rebuilt I have also deglazed using the same technique, and these engines are still running perfect to this day.

Be sure the cylinders are totally free of oil film before you attempt to deglaze with a ScotchBrite pad.

Can I get a second on the Scotchbrite pad.
