I just got a used Pioneer Premier DEH-P490iB. Great Stereo. Audio f'n kicks and the iPod functionality rocks. Traded something I never use for it. However the display is like stuck in DIM or something. The buttons are bright, but the display is dim. I've turned on and off the Dimmer and it doesn't change anything

Anyone knows what it could be? I was going to take the faceplate apart to locate a brightness adjuster, but didn't want to yet.

Are you sure you hooked up all the wires? On some headunits there is a seperate wire labeled Ill, or something like that, short for Illumination.

Yes. I've installed billions of stereo's. Stereo's Illumination wire is wired into the orange wire that gets 12v when parking light is turned on. The guy I got the stereo from said it used to be fine. Just gotta find out how to adjust the brightness. All the Pioneers I've messed with didn't have a brightness setting that I know of.

There is another Orange wire on the car's harness that gets a very short voltage increase when I turn on the parking lights, what is this? Is this a switched ground instead of positive?

Its seriously like the unit is stuck in Dim mode or something. I know the illumination wire is working, cause with the stereo off and not in demo mode, the buttons are off, and when I turn on lights, the button lights, light up.

Could it maybe be defective LED's?

Its a Premier so has a manufactures 2 year warranty, gonna see if I can claim it without a receipt. If not I'll just print one out at the shop. I just don't wanna wait another month or two for it.

i have the pioneer deh-p6800mp - not sure if there are any similarities between this unit and yours, but mine has a brightness setting that is accessed by holding in the volume control knob when the unit is powered off - this is a separate setting from the dimmer and reacts differently depending on whether the dimmer is set to on or off

When the unit is on, holding the Volume button turns the unit off. When the unit is off, pressing the volume button just turns the unit on. Its the SRC/OFF button.

When your unit is on, and what is the Volume button for? Cause whatever that button is, I could try the one that mine is.

Actually here's your owners manual...

It actually shows a function to change brightness. Mine doesn't. I'm gonna look for a hard reset button to see if there is one.

Ok, after some reading up on reviews, there is no brightness setting. Only a dimmer. But since mine isn't working, I must have some sort of defect. Going to talk to Pioneer come monday to see if I can have it warranted. Since the Unit is only a year old this money, and its a Premier so it has that 2 year manufactures warranty.
