Hello everyone,

FYI: The engine is a 1G (6 Bolt)
As some of you may know. I just purchased this 96 Eagle Talon TSi AWD. The engine has 7 years of hard running on the ACL bearings, wiseco pistons, eagle rods. Supposedly the engine was cared for pretty well. I do know the timing components have about 10k miles on them. The head is currently removed from the engine, so I have decided to do a mini rebuild (minus piston rings), and the following is the parts list I am considering. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Talon 2gb Front Fascia (Bridge Lake Auto Parts) $300 shipped
CX Racing Big 16g turbo (thedsmgraveyard.com) $269.10
OEM Main bolt kit 6 bolt (thedsmgraveyard.com) $35.71
Balance shaft eliminator kit (thedsmgraveyard.com) $39.99
Evo 9 intercooler (dsmtuners.com marketplace) $120
Cometic top end gasket kit w/ MLS head gasket (thedsmgraveyard.com) $184.99
Clevite Perfect Circle Rod and Main Bearings (Rockauto.com)$79.23
FelPro Oil Pan gasket (Rockauto.com) $5.82
FelPro Turbo gaskets (Rockauto.com) $23.79
Beck/Arnley 180 degree thermostat (rockauto.com) $4.84
Gates Waterpump (Rockauto.com) $30.79
Dorman Harmonic Balancer (Rockauto.com) $49.79

Balance before shipping: $1144.05
Total cost of shipping: $60.92
Total with shipping: $1204.97
Total purchase price of the car: $1000
Total investment (without paintjob): $2204.97

If I am missing anything for a mini rebuild without piston rings let me know.
Also if you know anywhere I can get these parts cheaper or a more reliable brand that would be great.

What is the general consensus on the CX Racing big 16g turbo? Why is it so inexpensive?

Thanks in advance for any help. :hellyeah::hellyeah:

Just a few things to point out- for the 16g I would look for a rebuilt MHI turbo. I can't speak for CXRacing, but I know the reason GodSpeed turbos are inexpensive is because they rent balanced from the factory and because of that tend to self destruct easily. You could take it to a machine shop to have it balanced and it should be fine though.
For the rod and main bearings, if you can afford them I would recommend staying with ACL. Not too familiar with Clevite.
Oil pan gasket is not needed TBH, they didn't come from the factory, just Mitsu-bond (very similar to Honda-bond). High quality RTV sealant should do just fine.
Not sure if you're aware, but MLS head gaskets need very precise head/block machining to seal properly. Just something to consider. Good luck with the (re)build! :thumb:

I appreciate the feedback. I'll probably call and ask if the CX Racing turbo is balanced, and get their take on it too. As for the bearings the ACL race set is only about $30 more expensive so I'll probably go with them. Thanks for the heads up on the MLS gasket. I was unaware about the machining required. What gasket would you recommend for a clean mating surface on the block and a milled head? (I also have ARP studs in the block if that makes a difference.)

A composite gasket will be fine with ARPs for a small turbo and even up to a mid size turbo if you upgrade down the road. Save some money on the HG and put it toward a better turbo!

I would stay away from cheap turbos. You get what you pay for. Some people have had decent results...others were disastrous. I don't know about CX racing specifically, but most china/ebay crap is about the same IMO. I have a CX racing FMIC, so I am not hating on them in particular!

Make sure the stub shaft in the BSE kit has the oiling groove in it!

Check partsdinosaur.com for engine parts and see if their prices are comparable or better. I have purchased from there many, many times!

Good luck!

Or look for more posts by JusMX141 that say cxracing in them.

Check out the classifieds too. I just picked up a rebuild 16g with powdercoating for under $500.

Evo III 16 g for sure! or perhaps a HX40. and ARPs for mains/caps/head.
What is awesome is people have been getting 600+ hp out of stock blocks just with reconditioning rods and micropolishing the crank.
But it might be easier and safer to run eagle H beams or Manley I beams are sweet!
