I believe the rims on my car are stock 16 inch. They have the silver color, but the paint is starting to peal and look like crap LOL So what i was thinking about doing is painting them. Could i just sand them down by hand and primer and paint them? WHat type of spray paint would you recomend? My car is red with a black bra, so i was either going to go red or black. Also, i'll probably be leaving the tires on when i do this OMG Has anyone else tried this? Thanks, B

I painted the white wheels off a 93 Talon Black, I sanded them with 180grit, 220grit, and then 400 grit sandpaper then i carefully masked off the lip on both sides and used layers of newspaper to cover the tires. I used some expensive rattle can primer and paint (maybe thats where I went wrong)and finished the job. However I doubt actual automotive primer and paint would prevent chips also. The chips were small, but noticable from a short distance. I would recommend sanding them yourself and getting them powdercoated or buy a different set of wheels.

Sanding works, but it takes a lot of time. There's an easier way. Just go to Autozone, Checker, Pep Boys, anything like that, and buy stuff called paint stripper. It's in an aerosol can, and will probably be in the spray paint isle. Just spray that stuff on, let it sit for like 5 mins, and the paint just wipes away.

There's a tech article on this:

Get Aircraft Stripper. Spray it on, let it sit for a few minutes, then all the paint will scrub off pretty easily. Make sure to get it on the lip area too to get rid of that yellowed clear coat. Avoid getting it on the rubber though, as this stuff is pretty strong and may eat your tires... Then if you choose to polish the lip, now is the time to get all the crap off there from wheel weights and what not. After they're nice and pretty, use some thicker paper, like a post card or like a deck of cards to put between the lip and the wheel all the way around. Sand any rough spots and then use some Duplicolor wheel paint. My car is red as well and I painted mine black and left the lip polished. I think it looks pretty decent. Check my gallery for pics.

I was planning on painting my stock rims black with the polished lip this weekend. I noticed this morning that I have those ugly little weights on the lip which I guess are from the last time I got a balance/alignment.

I'm wondering if I can take those off to polish and paint and then put them back on. I would appreciate anyone's thoughts on the matter.

Well yeah, if mark it and put the same ones back in the same place, no prob. Or you can go and get them balenced for like $40 and have them put the sticky wheel weights on that go on the inside of the rim and dont show. I dont even think it cost extra at most places.

Thanks Y'all. I'll probably just get them rebalanced. I would rather have the inside weights anyways.

OMG Stuff must be expensive where you are. $5 bucks around here. Free if you are on good terms with the tire place.

It varies a lot. It was about $5 in Montana where I lived for a bit. It's often $40 around Minnesota for a mount and balance.

The used rims I bought had a couple small weights on them. I just moved them on to the inner lip and haven't had any problems.

I have been wanting to do this but I have the chrome 5 spoke rims. The Chrome is start to chip off and looking terrible. What's the best way to remove it?

Thers places in Charlotte that wanted 40 dollars a wheel to mount and balance my 18's.
