Im going to paint my new Dave Brode UICP and I want to know if I have to sand down the pipe before I begin painting it, and if I do, why. Thanks

paint has to bond to anything you paint.Prepping the surface for paint is just, if not more important then painting itself.Any impure substance, like dust, grease from your fingers,or any solvent that might have been in the atmosphere where you paint, can and will affect your paint job.You might wanna give it a light sanding to help the paint bond to the piece a little.after that, clean it very well with some thinner or rubbing alcohol.Once the piece is totally dry,try not to touch it and make sure your in a area without any dust or anything like that.after that take your time, one coat at a time, and the more coats the merrier.

speedy hit it right on the head, you deffinatly need to sand it, cause if not then how will it seal to somthing.you can probably chip that other guys off pretty easily.another good tip would be to tie a string that goes through the pipe and hang it somewhere in your garage so you don't have to hold it while you spray, and i say in the garage because you wont get any wind or dust blowing on it, cause the weather is calm in doors. Good luck and post pic's when you're done with it. :thumb:

Use good heat resistant heat paint.
There is really no need for a heat resistant heat. Because this is after the intercooler which will keep the pipe pretty cool, nothing hotter than regular paint will do. I personally used spray on rubber coating on mine to give it a lowkey look.

I am not a fan of painting. I painted my current homemade intake pipe this past winter. I sanded the piss out of it, then I primed it, then I painted it (several coats), then I clear coated it. It still seems to get scratched up and chipped up very easily. :| I'm not the best painter, but damn, it should hold up better than it is......

I will be powdercoating it next time around.

Personally I wouldn't risk it, but thats just me.

Getting it powdercoated would produce better results IMO. There are a lot of places that powdercoat for cheap. You would never have to worry about it fading or being scratched off that way.
