Hey guys, I've looked through the other threads I could find but would love a little clarification on this topic.

My drip mouldings have the rubber peeling off of them, and before trying to find a new pair, I'd like to try to paint them with Plastidip first.

I do have a couple of questions:
1. Do I need to sand the chrome under the rubber at all before applying the paint?
2. How many coats should I apply, and should I put clear coat on top of that?

Answers are appreciated, a link to a thread explaining how to do this would also be appreciated.

Thanks!

1. No
2. Whatever you want. I have 3 thick ones on and it is still on. And not clear. Its pointless, especially for drip moldings.

And there is a gigantic plastidip thread in the hangout.

Thank you!

I appreciate the reply, that simplifies things for me.

1. Yes, You will want to at least scuff the metal to give the paint a good surface to stick to. If it is smooth it will peel and chip eventually.

2. Just enough to give it a solid, even coat. Clear if you want it to be shiny.

The plastidip idea wasn't a bad idea either.

Did you guys take the rail off the car to plasti dip it?

You can, but you don't have to. Just make sure to mask everything well.

Good luck with that. They have been discontinued. Plastidip is a great option though. :)

They'll probably return your money and say that they can't find them.

OP for what it's worth, I painted mine on the spyder. They came out pretty damn close to oem if I do say so myself.

I used 4 coats of plastidip and 2 coats of clear

Personally, this is the route I would go too. It will look about the same, and wont cost near the $100 they cost on JNZ.

All I did was take mine off, give it a sanding to take off any loose flakes and hit it with a light black primer. Then I just sprayed them with the rubber undercoating they sell everywhere. Worked perfectly and its even rubbery.
