Just bought an automatic 98 gst for 1000 bucks.
And it overheats like crazy,so bad the temp gauge goes up in like 40 seconds.
What can it be? this guy put on an hks blow off,he has a small fmic on it

and its missing everything from the cat converter to the muffler so it has half of its exhaust piping under the car..can any of this contribute to over heating?
if not then what might it be? what might i be spending? and what should i do? Thanks guys.

if its overheating that fast, you either have no water, a bubble in the cooling system, no water pump or something like that. The car should take a couple min to warm up, but unless your say running 20 lbs of boost on a road coarse you shouldn't be overheating that fast with no load. If its cold you could have frozen your block / radiator. You can overheat your engine in sub zero temps if there is no coolant or your coolant is ice. Happened to me back when i first moved to colorado, -17 degrees one night and the rad froze. It overheated in less than a mile from home.

First check you coolant level, then i would make sure you dont have any visible holes in your rad and that your fans are cycling correctly, if your fans arnt cycling correctly just put a constant power to them and see if that helps your problem. If those dont do it I would start with your thermostat, go get one from your local parts store and install that, that should probably take care of it. Keep us posted. Good luck.

i also forgot to mention it has been sitting for a year and the rad fan wont turn on! haha but okay thanks ill drain the rad, flush it out check for holes n stuff. i drove it like 20 miles from where the guy lived.the temp gauge got all the way to the top past the highest mark!

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG

did the car mess up or anything like that? smoking, steaming etc...

if not, it could be an electrical issue causing your gauges to go out of wack.

yeah it sure did steam..
it steamed so much my entire bay was soaked..
no nothin funky happened ........BUUUT i think i found what was wrong...

i removed the ic piping.. and let it idle for a few minutes and it ran 100x better... it didnt heat up..
no rough idle... nothin...it ran like a fresh new car out the factory..
Any comments?LOL

*** UPDATE***
I have a blown head gasket ..it was leaking black ass oil all over the garage..i move it outside.
kay so whats my next step? any advice? and would this contribute to the car over heating??

Just because it was leaking oil doesnt mean it has a blown head gasket but since its over heating so fast im leaning toward a blown head gasket. Even if your fan wasnt working it wouldnt overheat that fast.

I ran a honda half rad and no fan for a few months and it never over heated, but i also was running e85 at the time.

well i took gander at the spot where it was leaking from and i could see the head gasket sticking out some,is this normal? and yeah i know whatcha mean it shouldnt overheat that fast just cause the fan isnt working..plus its about 34 degrees out....i live in palm springs...umm.theres oil leaking from between the head and blok..what is it?

compression test is your friend :thumb:
OKAY im back and the car does not stop over freakin heating. we did a compression test and they all came out around the same the head gasket is fine ..i installed a fmic and it helped a little.. it doesnt get as hot as fast.. stupid couplings kept popping off LOL...but anyways...there isnt any oil dripping it gets to hottest point in about 7 minutes and steam FLOWS out of the overflow bottle. looks like a freakin tea kettle on crack. the engine idles at 1000 rpms then when it gets hot it idles like shit obviously at like 800 - 600 rpms... the coolant is a lil brownish and it feels like clutch or brake fluid im not sure if its engine oil because the engine oil is BLACK.. what could be contributing to over heating?
my best guess is the water pump or the thermostat?!

I just checked the thermostat in a cup of hot water and it worked....ughh i hope its not the pump i haaaate doing timing belts.

You are aware that driving your car that hot you potentially killed that HG. What was the compression? I would like to see actual numbers.

Lastly is your exhaust smoking? Are you burning coolant? Is it topped off? Are the fans coming on at all?

And a FMIC wont help your cooling issues with this, if anything you blocked more air in front of the radiator now and probally made it worse.

yeah i know... no way will i drive it overheating..i ran it in my drive way to check for vacum leaks boost leaks signs of oil spilling didnt find anything..the numbers were 158 164 170 168.. the fans did not come on at all , i tested th m on my other car with the ac on..they work..my exhaust isnt smoking or anything ,isnt spilling water or coolant nothin'.and yeah i topped it off earlier and it spit out alot of it. i burped the radiator flushed it till the water ran clear.
any thoughts?
