420A Overdrive Button Relocation

What's up, guys. I'm new to the forum but a long time reader. Last night I tried to remove my automatic shifter without reading up on it first, and just like many others, I had big time problems. I wanted to keep the same knob so I didn't want to cut the O/D wire. Unfortunately, I broke the button trying to rip out the white box and now the button is stuck in and won't press. I still want the button so I'm going to have to relocate it.

My question for you guys, as someone who doesn't have much wiring experience aside from doing my stereo, how do I go about doing this. I don't need for the O/D OFF to display on my dash so I know I could just go with a simple On/Off switch. But how do I go about wiring it? Which wires from the O/D button do I need to wire and to where? I hear people saying they wire it to their cigaratte lighter but I'm not sure how to go about doing this and would this leave my lighter useless?

You can possibly to something like this. To get you an idea, you can rewire the /D switch anywhere that you want that is easier to get to. A few examples, are the HVAC buttons where many guys chose to put there.

All you need is to switch a +12v ignition source (ie. +12v only when ignition key is On) to EATX-ECM pin 9 (which is the orange-black wire at the overdrive switch or at the EATX-ECM). The EATX-ECM has a large 60 pin connector so it would be easier to get at the wire at the overdrive switch. When switched it's overdrive. When not switched (left open) it's not.

okay, just so I'm sure about what you're saying, as I'm probably going to be doing this sometime later this week, I can take a switch, such as for example:

cut the black and orange wire and wire it over to this switch and then mount it somewhere in my car? thats it? I'm sorry if I'm not getting it.

If you can get at the 2 wires from the overdrive switch, orange-black and blue-red, just connect them to your new switch.

If not, you'll have to get at the orange-black somewhere (on it's way to the EATX-ECM from the overdrive switch) to use on your new switch. The other wire on the new switch can be the blue-red or any wire that has a +12v ignition switched power source. You can test for a true power source (as opposed to one that happens to have +12v on it but is not a power source) by connecting a 12v incandesent lamp on it to ground (when key is on). Should light up brightly.

You can use that 25amp switch if you want although only a 10amp would be enough (either works).
