My 97 Eclipse recently started overheating, I just changed both radiator hoses & the thermostat. However it only over heats when the car is not driving. when i drive it cools down. i also noticed that my reservoir tank gets full, its like the radiator is just spitting the coolant into the reservoir insted of sucking it out. HELP!! :banghead:

Change your rad cap. Are the fans coming on?

Try bleeding the system again, when the car gets hot the water expans dumping access in the resivoir, and when the temp drops its supposed to suck the water in the resivior back up, if you can take the water in the resivoir and put it back in the radiator, and its full, minus the little that's evaperated, its not your gasket. Your lines are just not holding pressure somewhere which like said above change your cap.

okay sounds good to me im going to change the cap & see if anything i would post my progress

So if you just sit there and let the car idle will the radiator fan come on by itself? Or does it require turning on the A/C to get either fan to work?

WP could be toast then, or radiator is all plugged up.

When it gets hot and overheating and when the t-stat opens up, does the temp suddenly drop on the gauge, or just overheats in general? If so, your system needs to be burped due to an airlock - why I mention of the .050 hole in the t-stat flange for this rids of the airlock.

All from me - done.

the fan comes on by its self. but when the A/C fan comes on it evens out.

i have a hard time believing its my water pump when i got that done in january. & no it dose not drop it just overheats in general.

yeah so i ran a wire in the fuse box from the rad fan to the a/c fan. so now instead of the rad fan coming on the a/c fan comes on. and i guess cause that a/c fan is more direct to the engine its keeping it cool. cause i haven't had any overheating problems since. But i still will like to know wtf is the problem LOL.

Check the front of the condenser(if you still have a.c.). Could be covered with shit not letting air through to cool down. Or as stated earlier radiator is plugged. Take the hoses off and run a hose in the top and let it come out the bottom. Could have stirred corrosion up with all the system updates you have done to the cooling system. Hasn't this been covered a half a dozen times atleast....?

Been having problems too, mine was the Rad cap and a small pinhole in the overflow tank line... not allowing coolant to be sucked in because it was just sucking air back in.

Go to my thread "blown head gasket" literally like 15 topics down.from yours and read the last 6 posts, id link it but I'm on my phone and its a pain.... there is also a link from another member 5th from last about radiator caps and overheating... read the entire link, it's got 6 different topics on why you'd overheat and they go in to depth on fixes or causes. Hope this helps

did you get a cheap thromstat from autozone or did you get a better one? aftermarket t-stats have much better coolant flow. i got mine off of howellautomotive.com they are the only site i know of that sells them for the 420a get a 160 degree if nothing else works. it shouldnt be boiling over like that into the reservior tank

Lmao yeah I did my t-stat from autozone. & I just changed it. & now that I think about it. It wasn't doing that b4 I changed it. I'm going to change it (again) & let you guys know.

Just change the Rad Cap and you will be OK.

yeah So i def did that already & im not OKAY

All the links are in my thread. If you back out and scroll down about 15 posts you will see "blown head gasket" the links are in posts made by NHerron toward the end of the discussion... like I said id link them but I'm on my phone at work. It would take you 12 seconds to find it

I have excactly the same problem as the OP. I bought the car with a broken radiator, changed it and the t-stat but it didn't help. I flushed the cooling system and nothing changed. Atm I'm running my car without any t-stat and it still overheats. The fan kicks in when the temp gauge is above the half. Only turning on the A/C will help cooling the engine. I don't know what to look at.

Btw the car even overheats on hot summer days on highway/autobahn, especially when I turn on the A/C. The gauge stays at about two thirds.

The coolant doesn't look special (like there's oil in it) so I don't think I have a head gasket problem. I guessthe problem is the waterpump.

My esi did the same thing anytime the level got low. had a small leak but id blow the rad and condensor out real good and get a bittle of water wetter it shuld cool it down them extra couple degrees
