Ok, freind brings his car over and say he thinks he blew the 2100 he had in there. So I drive the car and it feels like a FWD. I get underneath and I can pull out the drivers side rear axel from the pumpkin, without unbolting anything . And thwere the splines are it is snapped in half. And the stub that is still attached to the axel is stripped. But what gets me is this is a factory limited slip rear, so the passenger side should spin at least. But nothing. But when we jack the rear up, and turn the PASSENGER side ,it does turn the axel a little bit. I was thinkink he broke the drivers side off then it went inside and destroyed the gears. Any insight would be of help.

And a question I have is. This is a 90 car. Are the rear ends and axels diferent from a 91-94? Cause I know the trannys are different

I doubt the gears in the rear diff are broken, too. The LSD in the rear isn't that tight, it's set pretty loose so the car can do U turns without a wheel skipping. That's why you can spin the wheel easily.

There are two different rear ends on the 1G cars. The 90 and 91 models have a 3 bolt rear end, and the 92-94 models have a 4 bolt rear end. You can tell which is which by looking where the rear axle bolts to the hub. The 4 bolt rear end is stronger with beefier axles, diff, and hub. You can upgrade to a 4 bolt rear end by swapping the diff, axles and hubs. The 4 bolt swap is covered by VFAQ.com which also has plenty of pics.

Beware that auto equipped cars have a different rear diff gear ratio, so you can't mix an auto tranny rear diff with a MT.

I know about auto and 4 bolt cars. I was just wondering all this based on the fact that the 90 and 91 cars have so many differences. I think we will be ok. From what i have found they have to same part numbers for that axel. I just cannot believe it broke there and like where 3 bolts usually do.

That's where the 3 bolt rear end ALWAYS breaks. It always shears the axle clean off in the pumpkin. Happened to me AT the Shootout, 350 miles from home. Jacked the car up, pulled the broken axle off, left the sheared off stub in the pumpkin, and drove all the way home. :thumb: Got home, and swapped in a 4 bolt.

Dam Im scared now, Im about to put my AWD back in my car today and Im hearing all about these rearend axles sheering. What part exactly is breaking? a CV axle part or some inner gear?(in the rearend) Sounds like Im gonna have to dig up a 4 bolt rearend. But maybe Ill just look for a 92 with it already in it and the newer front end :D
