I noticed that my steering wheel was doing some minor shaking. (not pad or rotor related) Upon further inspection I noticed that one of my constant velocity boots was just dangling there. So I just cut it off and there is no more shaking. Here are my questions:

1. Where can I get a new cv boot for a 2g?

2. How long can I drive my car with NO cv boot before I do some major damage?

Thank you!!
Ryan

Mitsubishi dealer should be able to get you one. And with winter being here, with all the salt, water, snow, I would have it replaced ASAP.

1. Where can I get a new cv boot for a 2g?

Usually when I replace a CV boot I just replace the whole drive axle, they're like $50-$75 at autozone, napa, whatever. The one I have is from autozone, comes with a lifetime warranty so if the boot breaks, or the CV shaft gets messed up(clicking in turns, etc), they'll give you a new one no questions.

2. How long can I drive my car with NO cv boot before I do some major damage?

I wouldn't recommend driving it without the boot if you plan on reusing the axle. Grit and stuff can get in there and ruin the bearings in no time flat. If you're replacing the whole assembly, drive on it until you start feeling constant vibrations through your steering wheel, but be careful. I took mine too far once and the vibrations sheared my lugnut bolts off and threw my wheel on the interstate!!

http://www.raxles.com/ carries replacement boots.

Eek...Replace the axle I would say. If you're still driving on it like that, it will start clicking in turns pretty soon I'd bet. If thats the case, just get a new axle.

You can get them from Napa, that is where I got mine from. I would get it fixed ASAP, especially if you are doing "spirited" driving.

it will be much easier and close to the same price if you just replace the whole shaft. with a dealer price i got a set for $80.

I have bought boot kits from Raxles (I think raxles.com but I called them). They have been on the car for more than 100k miles and still look good.

I always keep my axles because I know they are in good shape- not beaten to death in a 11 second drag car, the seal surfaces are good, etc. If your axles are ragged out then maybe swap them out.

AutoZone, Adance Auto, Pep Boys...ect. sell a universal replacement boot....but I'd swap out the whole thing....but the universal boot is like $8. It will only buy you time...it is not a full fix.

That just happened to me and after buying a boot alone for like 27.00 and trying to get the spindle off yourself. I think it's way worth getting a new axle for 59.99 (autozone) with lifetime warranty and you don't have to deal with all the hassle.
