okay to turbo stock 4g64 pistons & rings

Was thinking about buying a rebuilt 4g64 block, for turbo build in the future. Was wondering if its okay to boost this engine with stock internals, are the pistons and rings strong enough? What would be the most boost it could handle?thanks
 
They have handle 22psi on a evo8 16G making 400+hp on E85. Have a pro tying it and you should do just fine.

That is impressive! when i boosted my sohc 4g64 I ran 8 psi all day long. I had no problems what so ever on stock internals. iirc at that time People told me 12 psi would be pushing it.
 
Mj, I have to say your friends car was a freak of nature, and probably belongs in a stock block record. Except he broke rod bolts right?

After a few months(maybe more, held up for awhile) of beating on it yes. But the same would happen to a turbo 63 as well. Same rod bolts in both.
 
I've heard the pistons are far weaker than even stock 4G63 non-turbo pistons because of the pin setting...what I don't remember is if that applied only to the G4CS blocks, or included the 4G64 as well.

I'm fairly certain thats just the g4cs. I asked John about this and he said the pistons are about the same as stock turbo pistons. Said crown thickness was pretty good.
As far as I know the weakest link in the 64 is the rod being 7 bolt(thin). Rod bolts in both 63/64s seem to need upgrading above 400+. Though after 100'000 the bolts could probably take more if replaced with brand new ones. Though there is significant difference in torque between a boosted 2.0 & 2.4.
The pistons weakest point, with a 64, I see would be ringland height being n/a.
Other than that it holds as much as a stock turbo 63.
